Ford 661 Tractor Troubles

I have a Ford 661 tractor(134 cu in gas engine) that I have not started for over a year and I can't get it going. I have cleaned the plugs, added new gas, radiator fluid and new oil/filter but no luck. I do recall that the last time I started it the engine was reving so high I shut it off and did not get back to fixing it. Any ideas how I can get this beast to turn over and start working for me again?

Check/clean point contacts.They may be corroded.

ell, Hobby, it looks like you have fired a lot of shots in the dark there. Try determining whether or not you have a spart to the plugs and whether gasoline will run out of the drain plug that you can remove from the bottom of the carb.......once some diagnostics point you in a direction, maybe we can be of further help.

Us folks raised with electronic ignition have a hard time dealing with or even thinking about points, we need to get over that. High reving is probably a governor or fuel issue, the fact it won't start or even hit know is probably ignition you have two choice trouble shoot and check or throw parts at it. Radiator fluid and new oil won't have anything to do with it starting so you've wasted some effort there. I'd pull all the plugs, open the gap up on one plug and vice grip or clamp it on a lifting lug or other point with a good clean ground and work the ignition until you can crank over the engine and get good consistent BLUE spark in you plug with a fat gap. then put them back in and work from their.

Sat a year I bet if you did the trouble shooting 101 you will find you have no spark and no spark equals not start.
It is always best to do the trouble shooting.
#1 check for a good blue white spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap.
#2 pull the carb drain plug and make sure you have a good steady flow of fuel there.
As for the high RPM problem make sure all the linkage is good and moves easy and there are no missing springs.
Also after sitting that long it would be a good idea to pour say a 1/4 cup of ATF in each cylinder while your doing the other stuff so as to free up sticking rings etc

Just a quick thought, If it hasn't been run in over a year, and you weren't really clear on how long it ran then, what does it have for gas in it? I'm guessing you checked it, but if gas is a year or two old, it may not be very flammable any more. Maybe you should drain it and use it to start a bonfire, then fill the 661 up with some fresh gas.

If it's been sitting for over a year, chances are the valves are sticking. Squirting some oil in the spark plug holes won't hurt.

Try a shot of starting fluid; if it won't start on ether then you have problems other than carburetion.

If the engine wouldn't idle down, it might have a stuck butterfly in the carb. You should be able to tell by turning the throttle shaft by hand.
