tractor gear box

does the gearbox also determine the tractor horse power, say if the tractor engine is 50hp, can the gearbox increase the tractor output through the gears ratio.

I say yes. There are many calculators for sizing rear axles in drag cars based on HP, torque convertor, first gear ratio, and rear axle ratio. I use to have a link, but can't seem to locate it. Most all of the major aftermarket axle manufacturers use these. Moser, Mark Williams, etc.

No, a gear box won't change horsepower. Horsepower is a function of torque and RPM. A gearbox can increase torque at the expense of RPM or increase RPM at the expense of torque, but the horsepower will remain the same. Of course that's not totally true since the horsepower output is reduced by the amount of friction in the gearbox, but the loss is not very significant in most cases.

If I could build a transmission that put out more power that what I put in, I'd instantly solve all the worlds energy problems and be infinitely wealthy...

Don't confuse power and torque. Torque is the rotational force applied to a shaft, power is a measure of the rate at which "work" (in the physics sense) is being done.

Torque applied to the drive wheels (and ignoring friction) determines the force which pushes the tractor (or an auto) forward. I can trade speed for torque...for a given power into the transmission, a lower gear provides more torque at the output, at the expense of speed. A higher gear provides less torque but more speed.

Look up the definitions of torque and power on something like wikipedia...

I should have specified torque not hp. As stated below you can increase torque through a gearbox, speed is traded off.
