I need advice,I have a jd 440 diesel that i am rebuilding and need t know how many o ring seals are required per sleeve. The old sleeves only had one ,but there is another ring groove at the bottom of the blower box.Do i need o rings for that one to? Any help would be good Thanks Bill

I want to see what answers you get.Years ago I was told you use one, if the O-ring groove goes bad, move the o-ring in the next groove. I have a friend that has worked on Detroits for probably 50 years. His comment is, put one in each groove. How well do the sleeves fit? Remember a good tight fit is necessary for good heat transfer. I have my Detroit 53 industrial shop manual in the garage, want me to look in the morning? J.

Item #17 is part number 5121256. Picture in parts catalogue shows one and in parts list it says "2 used." Part number 5195934 is a Cylinder kit. It includes: "1 liner, piston assembly, piston ring set, and cylinder seals (2 used)." Service manual says 2 are used. The smaller one goes in the bottom groove.

The view MSD has is for a very early block. Later blocks only have the 2 O-ring grooves in the top of the block. My GM shop manual said you only need the O-ring in the top groove. If the top groove is not serviceable, you should use the bottom groove.
