Growing wheat on wheat

Considering sowing some wheat back into last years wheat ground. Last years crop was relatively disease and insect free, had a little trouble with some rust that set in right after I had applied the 2nd app of quilt. The rust cleared up within 2 weeks. I understand that there is a greater risk of disease and insect infestation going wheat on wheat. I have never done this and was curious to see if it has or hasn't worked for others. My reasoning here is that I already have the ground worked and could make a nice seed bed with another pass and most of the ground is some rough side hill that won't produce real good beans or corn in a dry year. The other option is to start working corn stalks to sow wheat. Thoughts and opinions? Thanks, Erik

It should work. Sounds like you have the volunteer wheat under control that helps for disease. I have done it and it worked.

Don't know if you have a "Goat Grass" problem there in KS, but in the NE pan handle we needed to work the ground twice by the first of May to kill it. I sold the farm to a guy in 2007 that was going to no-till everything, but have no idea if it worked.

Eric, here in central ks we plant wheat after wheat for a few
years in a row. Killing volunteer is the key. You hopefully
got enough rain to start the volunteer. You will be fine. Bob
