Just wondering

Seem to get more response from this forum than the rest. So here goes. Do any of you know if there is a way to "lock" the header in the up position on a JD 30 pull type combine. Mine has a hyd. cylinder on it and I need to transport it about 40 miles. I would hate for a cyl. hose to break and the header fall down. Thought maybe some of you had done this before.

Dad used to just replace the cylinder with a bar and a couple of bolts.
I know that's a PITA since you need the cylinder when you get there, so hopefully someone has a better answer.

I have improvised by using two pieces of angle iron, one on each side of the extended ram wrap with plenty of duct tape to hold them together. Usually I use one of the factory made cylinder locks from my corn planter or chisel plow.

That"s an older machine, but look for a "transport lock"......maybe a bar that can be shifted into position to lock it once the cyl has raised the header. Back then a lot of machines did not have them. There are some "ratchet" style couplers that can be used to transport older machines.....they would replace the hyd cyl and then be cranked to raise the header.

MAesure the length of the cylinder rod at extension, and the width. Cut two pieces of channel 1/2" shorter, and use a pin or a hose clamp to hold it in place, drop it over the cylinder rod and lower the head so the head rests on the channel, then secure it with the pin or clamp so it won't fall off the rod unless the safety is removed. To get it off, just raise the header and remove the channel.

Just use a log chain to hold it up fasten it where the cycl is. That will keepit up if the hose breaks. You can realkese the pressure to let the chain hold it up. Then when you get there raise the cycl and remove the chain.. No brackets ect are needed.

Originally there was a bar with a hook on each end that came with those. It hooked in to the linkage near the cylinder.
