JD 4010 wont go into 8th gear

I might go look at a John Deere 4010 to buy. Guy says it wont go into 8th gear. All other gears are fine but wont go into 8th. Is this a big problem that will only get worse and give me problems in the future with the tranny or other gears or is it nothing to worry about? Thanks

My 4010 often misses 8th. You have to put it where 8th is supposed to be and feel for it going between neutral and 8th in that range. It's been that way for about 20 years. Not sure if it's worn linkage or worn forks or something else but it never seems to get any worse.

If it will go into 3rd, 5th , and 7th. Then the trouble is probably in the external linkage not the internal parts.

You have a four range transmission with a Lo/Hi/reverse in each of the ranges. The fourth reverse is blocked out behind 8th gear.

Several years ago, I borrowed a 4020 from the fellow who leases our farm land.

I never did figure out how to shift the dammed thing. I just played with the shifter 'til I hit a gear that was going in the direction I wanted to go.
