I have an old international truck with a diesel engine. I was changing oil 2day it like 2 hold 4.5gal .I put in 4 gal 15w40 was short the 22 quarts but found a jug and put it in. Ooops! It was some leftover hytrans that I had put in a jug. Haunt fired it up yet hate to think I wasted 60$ in oil. Do you all think it will b ok? Or better change it. Thanks

You might be ok but if it was me I would change it. It could well be fine but then on the other hand you do not want to replace or rebuild that engine do you

What exactly was the hyd oil? I ask because UTF Universal Tractor Fluid is very close to a 30wt engine oil. If it was UTF, then go for it

go for it; shouldn't hurt a thing but then neither wooda running it 1/2 gal low. dipstick prolly doesn't say add, until it's a gal low.

I wouldn't worry about it if it was me--but if its on YOUR mind it will be a constant worry every time you drive the truck--

don't think it will matter on older diesel--newer high pressure oil charged injection system needs anti-foam additives-however what you put in is probly very anti-foam--

Pretty hard to hurt them IH engines and the hydrants is so close to what you put in that it won't really matter. Just watch for for foaming when hot and if none drive it. Remember oil is oil the difference is in the weight and additives. You have pretty much the same weight and same additives in these two.

A few years ago an Agco dealer said a local farmer's hired man was putting hydraulic/trans oil in the engines of the tractors when he changed the oil for the farmer. He said there were no adverse affects. These tractors were probably made in the 70's or very early 80's so the engines were built with old technology. Jim

Lots of old wives tales about that kind of stuff. When I was a kid, I remember being told that even ONE DROP of gasoline in a diesel engine would destroy it- but now find that many recommend a half gallon or so once in awhile on fill up, to clean up the injectors.

Don't think I'd let it worry me.

I agree too. I'd just check it everytime I started it (which you should probably do anyway). The lighter oil MIGHT burn off faster leaving it low.

If it were like new truck yea change it but you say an old truck..You will never know the diffrence..Might help it.

How many engines have live hydraulic pumps that leak into the crankcase. A lot. Never heard of it hurting the engine.
