my son bought a little 97 escort wagon, nice slick little car that runs like a top,and around 100K miles.BUT it needs a transmission.in the opinion of those who have drove them would it be worth putting a trans in for a work car? ive found them online for as low as $125, so the cost isnt a whole lot, just paying a shop to install. hes decided he dont want to fix it but im thinking i might use it as as a work car.

We have had 4 Escorts total. The years were 86, 91, 95, and 96 which are not the same model as yours but the basic structure and drivetrain is similar. The mileage on these cars were 269k (still running when sold), 239k (needed a clutch but still driveable when sold), 253k, and 290k. We still have the 95 and 96 and they are being driven daily. They are good cars. Parts are cheap, easy to work on and the quality isn't bad for a cheap car either. I had a 97 that I bought for parts that had a bad motor from someone running it out of water and overheating it but that thing had 325k on it.

Don't know if they are the same ones that were sold over here..... if so, it's hard to go wrong............... Just yesterday, was driving about 100 mph on the autobahn and one zoomed by us like we were settin still....... Wife's brother has I think a 99 wagon that he bought new that he still has and drives about 60 miles RT daily (work days) since he bought it.......

thanks for the replies, seems like everytime i get a good car with good mileage ,one of the grandaughters winds up with it and im back to driving my old farm trucks that get 10- 15 miles per gallon.(my wife says im easy)..wouldnt take long to pay for a transmission at todays gas prices since i drive about 100 miles a day.

Had an escort wagon a number of years back with a bad engine. To bad I hauled it off for scrap you could have gotten the whole car from me for scrap price and had a good number of extra parts. In my house I have to buy cars with standard transmissions or the wife or son will destroy the transmission

if the car is solid and everything works good, i'd put a trans in it. they are a solid car and can go an easy 200k miles if you take care of them. the extra room in the back of the wagon makes it a good economical hauler.

Do it. I have an old Focus (its cousin) that I drive. I hate that car with a passion but it is good on gas and has never let me down. It still has the original battery in it.

It took a little bit for my ego to adjust to leaving the big pickup at home, but having a pickup in the shed with low miles that rarely needs fuel is a great feeling.
