Here is one spider you will never see up north.
A smiley face crab spider. It has a hard shell like a crab with a smiley face on it.
I really hate walking into the web since she has set up shop right out side my back door but can not bring myself to tear the web down.
Who said good looks never paid off.
Sorry about the picture quality.

we used to have one that color though, it was mostly round almost Bulbous looking small head 1/2 to 3/4 inc across body-- yellow body and black underside and head, used to find them in the fields, medows, but I haven't' seen any for years.

In fact I can't find a pic to post from the search??

Roy we used to run into them when we walked beans. They really freaked out my sister. The broadside of a corn knife really made them fly. Jim

We got them in what seems like a variety of colors around here. I've seen them yellow, white, sort of green, and probably other shades too that were never actually seen before they got wiped off your face after hitting the web going through the woods. Just be glad these are so small. Check out the one I found in the back room of my shop awhile back. It's a wolf spinder and the legs span just over 4 inches. Funny thing as big as it is I found one about 8 years ago that was probably 6 inches across at the legs in my wood pile.

John in La, does that thing glow in the dark? We have some here in NC that weave the usual large web and right in the middle they weave a zig-zag pattern, where they hang out. (pun intended) They have a yellow streak on their back that glows in the dark. Obviously to attract insects. I found this out one night when I was walking the path to the pond and saw something glowing, turned on the flashlight and was just about to stick my head into the web!

The ones your talking about we always call 'writing spiders'. Old wives tale is that if you put a paper with a name written on it close to their web they will match the pattern and put the name in the web. Never tried it but who knows. That said they are really cool to watch and, despite their size, they aren't the least bit agresive. I had one in the door of my shop a few years back. She kept putting the web down into the travel path and I kept removing just the strands that hit me in the face. Didn't take but two times of messing hp her web that she got the message and redesigned the web to be out of my way. I let her stay until she laid her egg sack and went on her merry way...... Have a few in other places every year, and like I said, need to watch so I just leave them alone....
