That happened on our JD50 once. Jacked it up, put it back on, never missed a lick.
Does make for an interesting ride tho!

Is that a little brown spot in the middle of the seat of the JD?

When we broke the right rear axel on the Farmal 400 we had a 2MHD mounted picker on it picking corn proably in 2nd. gear. Never did find the first two 3X12 planks that we were using as a foundation for the 8 ton hyd. jack. We replaced the axel in the field where she broke. Armand

Axle break..???


Over the years, we have broken 3 axles on our Late Styled "B"..always with the #226 Corn Picker..
They would break right outside the bearing..right where the splines end..

That happened to our 51 A when dad was planting corn with it. He came walking home and calmly told me the A lost a wheel. I went out there with the loader, picked up the A, slid the wheel back on and went back to planting. About every round I checked the bolts till I was reasonably sure they were TIGHT!.

The neighbor lost a wheel on their 4020 while going down the blacktop road. There was a gouge in the road in that spot till they resurfaced it several years later. Jim

So next time someones on the JD board asking how to get their wheels to move we'll just give 'em your name and you can show 'em ho it's done!!

Hate to see that happen, glad no one was hurt. I had the axle pull out of the final drive on my JD 5020. Had to have the tractor hauled back home. I didn't make much on that job. Stan

Hope Molly was not hurt from the fall and that she is OK.

Had to be a bone-jarring landing.

Very sorry that she had that happen to her.

Here's what I'd suggest on getting her 52A road worthy.

Start by locking the right brake.

Put blocks in front of the right tire and front tires before you lift the tractor.

You'll need a couple more blocks to put under the drawbar.

Call [b:654c4848f0]glennster[/b:654c4848f0] and get him to bring his tractor with the front end loader.

Once you get her 52A blocked up, check the splines on the end of the axle for any damage.

Put a chain through the "notch" between the wheel and rim.

Lift the wheel, rim, and tire with the FEL and press against the splines on the axle.

Turn the left brake drum by hand to line up the splines on the axle with the hub on the wheel.

Neigbor lost both duals off the right side of a 4440 several years ago go'n down the road, axle broke off right next to the rear end. There was a bump in the road till they paved it a few years ago. The yard he was in when he got stopped lost a few small trees in the deal.

Soooo glad she's ok & doesn't look like there's damage to the tractor, but big thing is she's ok.

BTDT, almost. My 48A is set up for spraying. I was spraying our hay field and the tractor quit moving. Thought the tranny had given it up. Pulled the clutch back, shifted gears and heard a "thunk, thunk, thunk". Started looking around and the left wheel had worked its way off the axle. The axle was resting by maybe 1/4 of an inch on the edge of the rim where the hub slides on the axle. The "thunking" noise was caused by the splines on the axle as it rotated on the edge of the rim when I engaged the clutch.

I very gingerly got off the tractor and shut it down. Walked back to the house and got James. We went back to the field with blocks, jacks & tools and remounted the tire.

Make it a point to look and see if the wheels have worked out any. Check the bolts periodically, too.

Its never happened again.

Interesting that it was the left wheel on my tractor, too. Also interesting that these wheels can be a huge pain to move in or out, but occasionally will work themselves off.

Sooo glad she's ok.

Travis M's, dad told me about your misfortune today- Me thinks the Ollie got jealous and loosened the axle bolts when you weren't looking. That'll teach you to mess with the "other green"! Glad Molly's ok.
