converting 3 point post hole digger.

I want to convert a 3 point rhino post hole digger to use on my skid steer.I was wondering what size hydrolic motor should be used.I was going to take the pto off and some how mount the hydrolic motor to the head with a coupler or U-joint.The hydrolic specs. are 16.9 gals per minute and 3450 psi . If any one did this I woulkd appreciate any help.

Speaking from experience...I think it would be cheaper and easier to just buy a digger that was already setup for your purpose.By the time yuo buy the motor, hoses, etc.plus the time and expence of building mounts,brackets...You get the idea.

The conversion can be done but it needs to be engineered correctly. I suggest you go to the following link and look at, the hydraulic, the hydraulic technical help section, and the mechanical couplings they have.

The hydraulic motor of your specifications would develop about 40 horsepower at the output shaft but your specs. do not include the RPM does the RPM match the speed you need for the auger?

Are you going to use the original gearbox are you looking for 540 RPM max. input for augers gearbox?

Hydraulic motors usually require either a motor spool or Cushioning valves to relive the shock load a motor can place on a system when you shut of the flow.
As it has already been mentioned unless you have most of these parts on hand it might end up being cheaper to buy a commercial unit.

Watch craigs list . We got one that was almost brand new that a guy bought just to build his pole barnand had no use for it when he was done . We gave 1200 for it and he had like 24 in it . Not only did he by the hyd auger he bought a new Deere skid steer dozer and back hoe for this one diy project and was selling it all for about half price . The dozer was a 550 H and he wanted 45000 grand for it with 120+ hours . I did not have the spare petty cash for that one.As we were also thinking along the same line as you . By the time you buy a mounting plate steel for brackets motor couplings hoses fittings then spend the time building it when you can spend rainy days surfen and a short dive . Or if you want you can get a new med duty one for around 2400 . then all ya got to do is plug and play.

A problem you might have is that the auger won't hang straight down with the hyd. motor mounted. You won't need all the hyd. capacity you have for the auger and may need to install a relief valve because the motor won't be rated for 3450 PSI.

Easy conversion. If I can do it anybody can. Mine goes on a Westendorf loader quick tach on one of the loader arms. The hoses plug into the outlets for the grapple claw. Motor is off a Deere bean head reel. To counter the weight of the motor hanging on the one side I used a spring that pulls up on that side. You don't need much pull from the spring.

The hydraulics on the tractor aren't much for GPM's so it doesn't turn all that fast but it does the job just fine. I haven't stalled it yet and I've dug through some hard graveled laneway with it. Your skid steer most likely has a bigger GPM pump so you will probably get a little more speed, but speed really isn't all that important. One nice thing about hydraulic drive is you can reverse it if you need to. Jim

Just re-read your post. Thje tractor I have it on is a IH 1086 with the 16? GPM pump but you're running about 1000 more PSI. I don't know what PSI the Deere bean head motor is rated for. Jim

Can't help you Dave.
I just wish I could somehow get ahold of your 3 point parts/boom as I have a good phd head, pto shaft and 9" auger here that I'd like to make into a 3 point unit.
It has some home made, goofy kind of lift arms for a WD Allis on it now.
One of those projects that's laying on the back burner waiting to find the 3 point lift.

Yep, surpluscenter is the place to go for parts, and hyd formulas.
Just keep in mind, that a used skidloader auger runs about $1750,
and augers are available all over the US, via EBAY and Craig's list.
Main thing with the Craigs List augers, and auction augers, is to roll
them across some flat pavement, to see if they are bent!

A possible problem, if you do the conversion, is that the ring gear and pinion are built to run in only one direction. If you run them in reverse, as you would be tempted to do with the change, this is something the gears were not designed for and you might not like the results.
