Gearbox ratios

I have a landpride RCR2596 rotary cutter, I have had 3 gearbox"s repaired under warranty, now the warranty is over, I have found a replacement gearbox for $395.00 its gear ratio is 1:1.5, but there is another gearbox that will work to its only $298.00 and its gear ratio is 1:1.26, both will bolt right on only difference is the ratio, it doesn"t seem like much of a difference? what do you think? this is a 8 foot mower with 2 outer gear boxes, I do alot of cutting and looking to have a spare around

If you put a different ratio gear box on, will that effect the timing of the blades? In other words, don't both boxes have to be the same, to keep the blades from hitting, every once in a while? I know some bush hog 8 and 10 foot mowers had the center shaft set up so that you had to have one set of blades north/south, when the other set was east/west.

They are the go to guys for gear boxes, and if you order early enough, and it"s in stock, they ship the same day.

Ask for Brian Brooks (not me, but a friend of mine) tell him you heard about him through Yesterday"s Tractors, and he"ll take good care of you! He"s probably forgotten more about these things than others will ever know. He may be able to get you a replacement for cheaper.

I should throw in here, that a 540 input at 1.5 is 810 RPM's, while 540 at 1.26 is only 680 RPM's, so I would think there would be a noticable difference in the 2, blade tip speed wise. The slower one wouldn't cut as nicely.

Mike,
On timing the RCR runs a center gear box with two "side" boxes. The side boxes have the stump jumpers 90 degrees. If you are replacing the center it shouldnt hurt, other than slowing the blade tip speed a bit. But I think the outer boxes are also a ratio too, so you might not loose as much tip speed as you think. You didnt say which box you were replacing.

Three gear boxes? Whats failing the bearings or the gears? Same box each time?

Is something out of balance in the PTO? Are you brush hogging 3-4" trees all the time? Pushing 180 PTO HP through it? The RCR25 is not a cheap light duty hog. Think it is rated at 1 or 1 1/2 in. Just kinda brainstorming what could take out three boxes.

its the outer gear boxes that have been the problem, gears are chipping off, I use a Kubota L5740 50pto hp, some times a 1 or 2 inch tree the most, but sometimes I cut a rock, alternator and steering gearbox ect, stuff I dont want to cut!

and I keep the blades balanced I have a jig set up to weigh the far end of the blade, like balancing a engine rod
