I have a 97 Dodge Ram 150. I looked out from the shop over the weekend, and something was hanging down in front of the rear wheel, driver side. I walked over and looked, the gas tank strap rusted thru. Looks like it is a fairly heavy strap. Can I get an aftermarket replacement or will I need to go to a dealer?? I haven't taken it apart yet, but as rusty as everything is on it, looks like it might be a bear to replace. Chris

Make sure the key hole in the chassis isnt rusted out.It took more than new straps to fix my Ford.Ford uses a metric bolt and nut to hold the other end of the strap to the cross member. No room for a 6 point socket on the bolt head. The nut came off hard.Years ago I was driving my old chevy truck when an old rusty chevy car coming from the opposite direction lost its gas tank.He was running 60 at least. The tank slid by me with sparks flying,The tank took fire.To this day I wonder what would have happened if the tank had slid under my truck. Why do US car makers use steel tank straps and brake lines that rust out.If you price original equipment straps you will be shocked. The last 2 trucks I did cost under 40 bucks for the straps.

Local parts store here carries universal straps that worked on a '95 Dodge.

I think they were about $15 plus bolts/nuts.

Put a nylon ratchet strap up there until you can find the right one. Works on a semi if you don't get caught. Jim

On my semi-tractor when they rusted thru, I bought stainless steel and remade them. Never rust thru again!! A lot cheaper than what the dealer wanted too!

Galvanized 1/8" strap with holes every inch can be found at most hardware stores. Were it mine, I would hold up the tank with a wooden block and floor jack. Removing the old one might require a cutoff tool to cut the bolt. (be cautious with sparks, a bolt cutter might be preferable, or it might just surprise you and unscrew. then copy the length and bands in the new material (might take two lengths overlapped and bolted together with flathead screws to reduce the amount theystickout toward the tank.) use nylon webbing or nylon strap just wider than the new strap to buffer it from the tank. and install it. cost 20$. Bad idea on most trucks.Plumber strap is weak because of all the holes.A full tank can weigh 160 lb.My 77 Chev tank sat on strong L brackets. The straps just kept the tank on the brackets, didnt carry weight. Why cant auto makers be forced to use rust proof tank straps and brake lines on a 40,000 buck truck.

I did not say plumbers strap (ehich comes in a 12 foot roll and would not hold at all. But if that impression was given, Don"t do it. The material I was refering to is 12 gauge thick. Jim

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see

A number of years ago auto makers were braging about useing corrosion resistant material in their exhaust systems.Still using rust prone steel for fuel and brake lines though.
