Go to Cabela's store or catalog. Find a trail cam that you can disable the flash. Leave some light on in the area.

Rick,

A camera may tell you who done it, maybe. It may not stop the thief.

All security systems can be breached. Think about something that will alert you or another interested person and to intercede before the theives can get away.

I was in menards the other day and saw they have a motion detector light that has a camera built in.It has a sim card you can take out and use in your computer.

Panasonic makes wireless security cameras that will record the picture in memory, send you the picture via email, and or send you a email of the motion detection. You can see up times to monitor and times not. You can hook to the internet or just plug in power. They are all over ebay .. look up panasonic bl-xxxxxxxxxxx series cameras.. various prices for various models. I have them everywhere, as I had "family" who kept coming over and "borrowing" stuff. I did get a false alarm once when a butterfly landed on the camera lens. I have them all all 4 sides of the house, in the garage, and in the shop.

Probably a waste of money, but I got a fake camera after I got burglarized in broad daylight. Similar story, both of us worked day shift , and cop told me that was more common than night burglaries. To afford our neighborhood we both had to work and the robbers know that. If anybody answers door they usually go on. If not, they kick in door and run through house in case there's a silent alarm. Cop said the dwell time is usually less than 2 minutes. I was thinking the fake camera might make them go on to next house, hopefully the crabby ones.

Put these decals in the window

Confronting thieves can be dangerous, specially the drugged up ones.
If they find your camera with a memory card in it, they'll just take the card with them.
Or the whole camera.
The ones that send you the picture in an email or text would be better.
I have motion detecting cameras that connect to my wireless network.
They automatically Pan, Tilt and Zoom as needed.
You can access and view the cameras from work if you have internet access.
A computer in the house records the pictures when the cameras are tripped
and can email them if desired.
They are NOT cheap, and of course if thieves steal your computer you're
still out.
And they don't work if the power is cut.
Two cents.

A PIR or Ultrasonic motion detector that will turn on some big quartz lights and a big Klaxon horn might scare somebody away. Or magnetic switches on the doors to switch on the same stuff. The door switches are less prone to false trips. There are alarms that will auto dial preset phone numbers. Sometimes you can identify intruders with a good, properly installed, video camera/recorder, but that's after the deed has been done. The systems that send you a photo of activity work if you or the police are next door, but usually there is travel time involved and the ill doers are gone by the time somebody shows up. To be fully legal in court photos and video need a "time stamp" that can prove the material has not been altered.

Part of my job was specing and installing security cameras on campus. Our main supplier was www.directlvs.com and some from www.securitycamerasdirect.com (usually just dome cameras from them)
Amazon.com and Newegg.com sometimes have a decent deal on less expensive packages. The big trend now is networked H.264 digital cameras feeding a DVR (digital video recorder). A decent H.264 camera with lens will run around $1k each.

If you do decide to go with a camera: Do not point it directly at an exterior door, from the inside. In the daytime, when the door opens, outside light will trick an auto iris lens and all you will see is a silhouette in the doorway. There are cameras with DSP that will compensate but they are $$.

I put in a 4 camera outfit. Color, infrared, motion sensitive cameras going into a hard drive.

I found that once you get the system and let the whole neighborhood know the area is being filmed, the theiving stops.

I also have Infrared game cams set up in various locations.

I personally like a 2.5 X 7 power Redfield on a .270 as my main camera.

I have an 8 camera, DVR system from Q-See at my cabin up north, it has motion detect and e-mails me clips when it"s tripped. It keeps about 14 days of continuous recording stored. Was about $500.00 total, well worth it, have not had any issues since it was installed.

Perhaps....

You may be taken from your possesions, however, a single alarm does not give the locals a chance at getting them.

Photos give the locals a chance at ID.
