Nice pics. I was a mere 7 years old when they were taken. I wonder how many years it had been mined by then? Is it still operating? Jim
 
I was up working at one of the mines on the iron range last year. They are still working, but the ores are not as high of quality. The operators are thinking about reprocessing some of the older tailings for precious metals.
 
My better half is from Hibbing. She got de-Ranged in "68, due to her first elem teaching job in central MN. Hibbing is the town that moved early 1900s cuz it was sitting on such rich ore. Interesting pix, moving buildings with animals and small tractors, trucks. (google the book- the town that moved. Interesting history and pix of the mines, town, etc.). IIRC Hull-Rust mine is the one NE of Hibbing, the biggest open pit iron ore mine in the world. da Range pretty much supplied US ore for WW I and II. Taconite processing was developed with help of U of MN engineers in the early 50s, could reclaim ore of lesser iron content. Most of that is used up- now they"re going after the spill piles, but mining is very decreased there.
 
Thank you for the photos. My late uncle was a geologist for Oliver Mining around that time. He was a great guy.
 
Gitrib, I can't thank you enough for posting these great pictures. If you don't mind, I'd like to copy these to my "Mining" folder. Model railroading is my winter past time & there is an iron mine going in on the second level of my train layout. Not really picking one in particular, just using the influences from the mines up north in the iron range, the old Sunrise Mine in Colorado & the borax mine in Trona, California. The photo's just couldn't have come at a better time. Especially of the engines. That TR6 set from Electro-Motive was only about four or five years old when you took those photo's. I am in the process of modelling that engine set & when finished, it will have sound effects, lighting, a complete interior in the cab with engineer figure & a lot of grit & grime. The engines are currently awaiting paint & said weathering job. The cab needs to get finished, too. If there's time in the next day or two, I'll get some pictures posted, if you're interested. I have some video footage of their first run, last winter, but have no idea how to post a video.

Looks vaguely familiar, we might have visited it on a family vacation back in the 60's to the Boundary Waters area. Also saw the Great Lakes freighters being loaded, pretty impressive.

Somewhere, I have photos of the massive Yellowstones that once pulled the ore trains to Lake Superior for shipment to Detroit, Cleveland and beyond.

It was coal, steam and the back breaking work of folks willing to work that built this country.

For many reasons, all having to do with government, it simply could not be built today.

Some people look at that and see destruction. I see man providing a better life for his family and neighbors.

Interesting that going after the tailings in being talked about. Near where I grew up in the Adirondacks was a large mine where they took out titanium dioxide. I understand there is interest in the tailings there and at Bartons garnets mines in North River. I hope it goes, any poke in the eye to the tree huggers that involves money in the locals pockets is good in my book.
 
A lot of the mines up there have vegetation growning in them. THey look like rugged cliff faces.
