I use universal trans/hydraulic oil in all my tractors, JD 70, IH 400, Oliver 88, and 2 1850's. Farm & Fleet has 5 gal buckets of this oil for $39. Orscheln's has JD 303 20wt hydraulic oil for $29/5 gal. Will I create any problems if I mix the 303 with the universal oil?? I use 1 1/2 to 2 buckets a year. Trying to save a few bucks. Chris

For a measly 1-1/2 to 2 pails of oil a year. Just how much are you saving by not using Hy-Gard? 2-3 thousand dollars ? No about the price of a couple packs of smokes, that is all.
How much does a set of brakes or a clutch pack cost?
Purchase the Hy-Gard and you will know it meets spec. You won't have to worry it's counterfeit plain mineral oil in a more expensive labeled pail either.

Check that generic JD 303 out real carefully. We had TSC have a bunch on sale here a few years ago. It was claimed to be JD 303 equal until you read the fine print on the buckets. It stated that it was not for use with any hydraulic clutches. What??? Just about any thing newer than 1973 has a hydraulic clutch in it if it is JD. I got three JD 30 and 40 series tractors in for new main and PTO clutches after they used this oil. The clutch facings just delaminated off the steel hubs.

Some of the tractors you listed have "wet" clutches in them. The Oliver 1850s do I know. I think the IH 400 does too. So I would check it out real good. You might be causing yourself some problems with the cheaper oil.

I don't use it in anything. I just feel safer using a quality oil not the el cheapo stuff. I will just try to save else where as a mistake in this oil can be costly.

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see

I think it is probably the same oil, but don't take my word for it.

You tested all three oils in the lab and verified they are identical?
I'll bet neither meet Hy-Gard spec.
