sucking air, most likely--if no leaks found in the hoses, etc, look at standpipe in tank if it pulls outa top--pump can suck air too--rig up clear sight glass to put in suction line @ pump so as to see bubbles--saves a lot of guesswork-good luck---

Hello LLOYD MacLEOD,
You are experiencing all the symptoms of air entering the suction side of the fuel system.Take the fittings off at the tank and the pump. Pressurise the line with air, and with bubble soap you may find the leak. Check both side of the fittings for a good fit. If you don't fine any leak, the next step is the tank pipe. Hook up the fuel line to the pump and put the other end below the fuel in the tank.
I think you will find the leak without going any further .
Guido.

Maybe a leaking throttle shaft seal , it could be the aneroid vale is not opening up due to a leak in the air line from the after cooler to the pump. As far as not wanting to unwind could be a sticking throttle linkage as it does not take much .

Many years ago I was running this same engine got a bad fuel filter was sucking air did't leak fuel out ,had small crack in the top where it was crimped together.

That sounds exactly like our 8960 tractor when the fuel filter is plugged or half full of water. It only has 1 small filter and we change it twice a year or When it starts to be slow to respond to load changes.
