I have a 49 ferugson tractor. The generator has been replace with an alternator. Does this make it a 12 volt system?

Probably- but there are 6 volt alternators available. I assume there's no battery- so look at the coil, it should say.

No battery??? If so then you stand a 99% chance that is is 12 volts since 6 volt alternators are few and far between. One way to check would be to set a 12 volt battery in it start it up and then check the volts across the battery. If 13-14 volts it is a 12 volt alternator if you get say 12.3 it is a 6 volt one or one that does not work. Also if you find a ballast resister between the ignition switch and the coil it is a 12 volt system

Some one on here last week asked the same question. Best bet is to take it to your local parts house and let them run and test it. You'll know right away and will save you some headaches in the long run. Eleminate all doubt!
