Was recently using the old gas IH gas 400 to disc some CRP. It started running ruff, belched out a bunch of carbon and died. Now all it does is back fire through the carberator once in awhile. It seems to have spark ( has elec. ignition ). I took the carb off and apart and cleaned that. Doesn't seem to be getting much gas. The spark plugs are clean and mostly dry. Adding gas to the cylinders does not change what it does. Not sure what the timing should be at or how it could be out of time. Ideas anyone .

does it have hydraulics? if so the cam gear key may have sheared. sure sounds like the problem.

Take the plug out of the bottom of the carb and run gas into a can for about a minute, if the flow is poor, then there is your problem.

Seems to have spark???? That is not good enough you need to be 110% sure it has spark. The spark needs to be a blue white in color and jump a 1/4 inch gap or more. Check that at the coil wire the center one on the cap and that check it at all the plug wires. A back fire and that carbon could be a number of spark type problems like a bad coil or a distributor rotor not turning or turning off and on. Point slipped would also do that.

Have a good blue spark from HTL to over half an inch.

rich, i noticed he has electronic ignition on the tractor. i would suspect the module in the distributor went bad.

Ya missed that when I said points but can be as you said or the coil. Either way he need to be sure of what his spark is

Bring No1 piston near the radiator to TDC on the compression stroke. Then see where the rotor is pointing, should be at your No1 plug wire. Hal

I turned the engine over till it was the TDC mark on the pulley. It looks like the rotor is just a hair past the next terminal on the cap which would be #3. I don"t have a compression tester, but it does appear to be blasting air out cylinders.

Could be the cam drive gear has failed (hub has broken). This throws off the cam and spark timing and prevents the engine from running.

When the gear hub breaks the engine suddenly stumbles then just quits, exactly as you describe. It's not an uncommon problem for the C264 engine with a live hydraulic pump.

Quick check: Set the crankshaft to TDC and mark the distributor rotor position. Now unbolt the live pump and pull it back from the front cover. You will see the cam gear inside the front cover. Reach in and try to wiggle the gear. If the gear moves at all with finger pressure, the gear hub has broken.

some of that old crp ground can be pretty rough if yours is like mine. You might have shook enough junk loose in the fuel tank to stop up the screen on sediment bowl. or sucked up some water. however if you put a little fuel in cyls and it didnt fire, that doesnt sound like a fuel issue. best bet would be to post this over on the ih board.those guys could tell you about timing it. might pull plug on number one cyl and get it on tdc.pull dist cap and make sure rotor is pointing at number one plug.that should tell you if youve broke a tming gear/chain etc. does it sound as if it has compression while your cranking?

If the distributor cam is worn such thatthe shaft can get way out of place, the ignition timing and intinsity will be irratic and failing. The shaft should be rotating with less than .002" of movement in any radial direction (up down in out) Jim
