Grain Storage Questions

I am a 26 year old farmer in Eastern TN, I would like to raise corn and beens maybe 40 of corn every other year with beans in between. I live in a area that used bins are very very rare. I have a 3 sided 48 long by 28 3 sided metal barn. That I could concrete or close in if needed. Is there anyway I could store them in the barn. Or another cheap grain storage idea would be great!

Work with your local coop for storage. You can do that if you are raising non special crops. We raise waxy corn for Cargill, so cannot store there.

You could concrete the floor in your existing shed, and use jersey walls to contain the grain so it doesn't push against the shed walls.
Only down side to this method is loss from moisture and rodent damage.

for corn, depends on your yield, but say 200bu/ac you'd need about 8000 bu capacity. for beans, at say 50 bu/ac, maybe 2000 bushel. i'd look to find a used bin in that size range, or maybe like some old government bins. check illinois and indiana area. you can get them pretty cheap, take em down and haul them on a trailer and put them back up at your place. with an air floor and an unloading auger, it will make your life a lot easier. i bought 3 used bins some years back, 2-14000 bushel fs bins, one had a dryer and stirrators, and an 8000 bushel brock with a dryer for 5 grand for the whole bunch. we took em down and moved em, and put them up at the last farm. bins even had sweeps with them.

Contact your local Farm Service Agency. They have had some programs to assist with the cost of new bins. You might even qualify as a "young or new" farmer and get even more help.

Can you combine corn dry enough in your area to put it in a bin without drying it? That is always the difficulty with storing smaller amounts of corn on the farm - how do you dry it?

Paul, I agree with you on the drying. It would have to be extra dry to put in bin with no air, so that would reduce the weight.
