Hole in Exhaust Manifold

On a 700 Ford tractor. Other than taking the exhaust manifold off and welding up this hole, which is about the size of a quarter, is there some type of filler (JB Weld, etc.?) that I can use to close it up? I really don't want to have to take the manifold off the tractor if I can get by. I'm looking for the easy way out.

dont tell anybody, but i jb welded the exhaust manifold on my 42 m about 10 years ago, and it is still holding. one of these days, i prolly should put a new manifold on it.

my experience with trying it is that it works ok untill you get to pullng tractor hard then it burns up. i have a 2n that i patched twice, but it didnt stay long with jb weld. when i pull it again it will be replaced.

JB might work if you get it clean enough. Any rust left and it will come off when it gets hot.

a quarter sized hole is huge...

get a new or used manifold...

the edges of the hole are likely thin and will break when welded.

I have welded up holes bigger than that. Just take your time & run a bead & let it cool while peening with a pointed hammer to remove the slag. Keep building on the first bead until the hole is gone. Start at the bottom & work up. I did a Farmall H that had many holes in it while it was on the tractor. I used 7018 rods.

There must be some bargain priced jobber shop replacement manifold. More than one equipment fire was caused by leaking hot exhaust gasses igniting something.

Had the same thing on a super c farmall.About quarter size.Made a little slug out of 1"x1/4" flat bar an brazed it in on the tractor.Perfect for 8 yrs.

Get some JB weld and mix up a dob, after it sets up hold it over a fire and see if it turns to chalk. Now you have to remember how long it will be in the fire on that manifold. Then go get yourself a new manifold.

Exactly!! Many years ago I spent considerable time patching up and modifying the exhaust system on a riding lawnmower. The goal was to not only make it quieter, but to also get the heat away from the operater. I used quite a bit of JB weld on that project, and everything looked good. It even actually worked quite well, but only for less than 5 minutes before it all just sort of fell apart right before my eyes as that JB weld melted and burnt away

A hole the size of a quarter? That did not happen overnight. Here"s my 2 cents worth- LOL- that stuff does not fix itself..well, nothing really does....bet many other areas are paper thin. Give the man a pull, replace him....just that much more enjoyable tractor wrenching time...and in the future- don"t have to worry about fires, etc., down the road.

If the hole is in the right place, you can drill it out, with a unibit drill, then tap and thread it for a pipe plug, but this has limited uses. Also check steiners or shoup's prices, or this site's, for that matter. I doubt that the manifold is real expensive.

I fixed one about that size on my Case 900. I cut a piece of 1/8 steel and pounded it into shape, cleaned the manifold good, and carefully spot welded it in with a mig. It"s been holding fine for 3 years.

orget the J-B Weld! It has its places but this isn't it. Look at you manifold, working it hard, at night....it is glowing cherry red.......J-B can't handle that temperature!!!!
