exploding tractor!

My wife's uncle went to hay field to check out tractor that his wife was raking hay with. She reported that the hydraulics were not working right, while he was standing on the foot board the clutch exploded , destroying housing sending parts flying into the field. wife sitting on seat was unhurt, He is in the Hospital with leg bones crushed below the knee. Having surgery this morning, please pray for a sucessful recovery. This is all I know of the event, other than it was a John Deere tractor.

Whoa,

That is horrible. Hope all is gonna be ok for him. Will pray he has a speedy recovery.

Hopefully he lives in a good neighborhood, where folks will pick up the slack for him. Coming into september is a tough time for a farmer to be laid up.. BW

OW , myself i have experienced clutch failure first hand on several occasions First one was in my 61 ford when a Schrieffer dual disc rev loc came unglued at around 7 grand . Took out the scatter shield cut the steering column in half removed the master cyl. off the fire wall but nice BIG holes thru the hood put big dents in the floor pans from pieces and parts bouncing off the road . A week after my clutch let go a young guy tryen to empress the young ladys at the beach had his clutch let go but he was driving a Corvett and he lost both legs below the knees Saw the end results of when a old style T/A clutch explodes and makes big holes in the center section of a Farmall .

Now you know why they demand scatter shields on certain vehicles at the drag races. Years ago when they were just getting started you could stand right down by dragsters. One time in San Diego I was pretty close to a small dragster when the clutch let loose. A piece hit the flag man and knocked him out. The next car went off and there no one even close to it.

PS things have sure changed from those old days back in the fifties.

Hope he recovers well. People always think accidents happen because you're careless, but parts do wear out too. Usually when you are not expecting them to.

Two years ago a tire from a slingshot dragster (true 60s style), just missed my head. I could feel the wind and the heat of the tire as it went passed. As the car entered the burnout box I had walked forward to spot the starting lights for him. As he exited the box he was going 20mph, and tires around 100mph, tire was fatigued and separated from the rim for some reason.

Never have seen that first hand, but had an eather explosion on a 460 diesel utility once. we kept a can of eather under the seat in the winter for starting. Forgot about it. It rode there most of the summer. One hot day, I was cuttting hay. I stoped at the end of the field to talk to dad, who was raking. While i was standing by his tractor, we hear a loud eplosion and the 460 was in a cloud of eather. 460 raced for about 10 seconds till the cloud blew away( windy day). It bent the sheet metal under the seat out about an inch. I was lucky that day!!!

It usually takes lots of rpms for a clutch or flywheel to explode..Years ago about 10 miles from me,a HD-11 Allis dozer engine ran away and the owner was killed by an exploding flywheel while trying to get it shut down..

Heres what happens when a injection pump plunger sticks on a pulling tractor that has no safety equipment..

I hope that your wifes uncle is doing OK..

was a a local ih dealer one day looking a piece of equip, one of the mechanics had just replaced a bad turbo on a right new tractor when he started it up it went to belching gray smoke flew wide open upon realizing he could shut it off he bailed out off the cab and was on all fours trying to get away, i stepped behind a combine till it started slowing down, didn't know a diesel could turn that fast without coming apart, exhaust was pointed toward the shop door the smoke flushed them all out, wondered if they guarantied the engine
