77 new holland baler

I have a chance to buy a 77 new holland twine tie baler and would like to know your opinion. Where could I find parts such as needles and other misc. as I am thinking of restoring it. It is a right hand feed with no canvas. Any thing I should look for? Thanks in advance Gordy 612 986 6151.

I used one for several years. They make good square bales, none of the NH banana bales of the slightly later era. The pick up is the weak area on that baler. The pick up drive chain kept jumping off on mine and i welded a flange on the idler puller. The pick up chain, that the teeth are attached to, can run off the track under the pickup.

Knotters always worked well. A bill hook wore out once, easily replaceable.

Needles are not availiable from NH.

I wasn't thrilled with hand cranking the v 4 Wisconsin motor. Toward the end, I replaced the magneto which improved cranking.

The big tire , a 9:00 by 24, is, or was, expensive. I had a wheel which used 9:00 by 20 truck tires, much cheaper.

Makes a little larger bale in cross section than todays balers, plunger stops a stroke for tieing. You need to feed it fast it was a high cap. rig back in the day. The govenor is suppose to open up at each stroke, get ear plugs!

I just sold one this summer that my Dad bought new in 1952, used it for custom baling into the 60's and I used it until into the 80's. Last baled straw in 2000. That machine baled hundreds of thousands of bales and still worked good, no one liked the large bales anymore. It had the Wisc.engine with distributor and electric start, was just about absolutely trouble free, grease it and go, would bale all year and never mis/tie a bale. Had duals on both wheels, it's new home is at the Nowthen Threshing Show, Nowthen Mn. There are quite a few still setting around the country.

Mike I saw that baler on Friday when I was there and looked it over pretty good. The one I am looking at has both needles broken and engine is locked up. Gordy
