Trouble shooting....

I posted this on the 2N site but did not get any feeback - Years ago we had a rule of thumb saying about backfiring - I cannot remember for sure which way it went - up the carb was ignition and out the exhaust was fuel - or was it vice versa? Obviously not always the case but got ya started on troubleshooting.

The only rule of thumb I know about backfiring is the timing is off.

The old Fords that I was involved with as kid all ran well, but would back fire out the exhaust almost steadily while holding a load back going down hill.

Running too lean will do it, too

A sneeze out the carb is lean fuel or intake valve. Exhaust is timing or valve.

If it's any help,I was working on one today. Had the spark plug wires crossed and it popped back through the carb.

Lean idle screws will do it on the V8.
