Trouble shooting....

I posted this on the 2N site but did not get any feeback - Years ago we had a rule of thumb saying about backfiring - I cannot remember for sure which way it went - up the carb was ignition and out the exhaust was fuel - or was it vice versa? Obviously not always the case but got ya started on troubleshooting.
 

The old Fords that I was involved with as kid all ran well, but would back fire out the exhaust almost steadily while holding a load back going down hill.
 
If it's any help,I was working on one today. Had the spark plug wires crossed and it popped back through the carb.
