Just went down to Omaha this morning and listened to Temple Grandin speak. Very interesting insight.
For those of you who don't know who she is, she is an autistic lady who has a PHD and is involved with the cattle industry. She overcame many of the obstacles of being autistic and went on to design cattle loading chutes and other catle handling facilities to make working with them easier. Many of the packing plants now use her ideas. She is also an activist for people with autism, which is what her talk involved. She has written several books and had a movie made about her which was very good.
To keep it tractor related, while there a gentleman noticed my Red Power Roundup shirt and commented on it. It turned out he was an insurance adjuster and sculpter with Aspergers Syndrome who LIKES OLD FARM EQUIPMENT!
There were other speakers also, mainly pointing out effective ways to help kids in the autism spectrum. Really makes a person appreciate how some people dedicate their lives to making other peoples lives easier.

That is a great movie. It shows her ability to focus, and stay focused, in situations where most other people would be distracted by what is going on around them. It doesn't mean that she is nuts; she just sees thing differently than we do (And maybe more clearly than we do).

I remember reading some of her ideas years ago in a farm magazine. Can't remember a lot of the details, but I decided at the time that she was basically a nut. Some of her theories we (and other folks who knew ANYTHING about cattle) were already being used......curved chutes, work towards the light, instead of the dark, etc, etc. But........I thought at the time that I'd love to have her down on the farm, where we had a few hundred head of cattle to push through a chute in 2 or 3 days time; cattle that were only penned/vaccinated/wormed, etc twice a year.......basically 'range' cattle. I've known some smart people who've had PHDs; I've also known some (one was a 1st cousin) who had ABSOLUTELY no common sense.

No doubt that some people already knew what she gets credit for. Even Christopher Columbus got credit where others had already been.

Just her personal success is something to be proud of. As far as her being a nut, well there are plenty of people in that category, probably everyone at some time or another. One of the things that was brought up was that Albert Edison, Nikoli Tesla, Steve Jobs, and any number of other "crazy" people that were on the spectrum and made significant contributions to society.

NASA and Silicon Valley are full of these "handicapped" people they say, and with some humor she claimed that the first spear was probably made by someone with these problems. Because, she claimed it wasn't built by someone sitting around a fire being social!

Re: Autism.
My son has AS, Aspergers Syndrome, commonly known as HFA or high functioning autism.

In reality there are alot of "US" with undiag"ed AS.

Know I have it and mother did also.

I gave up trying to "fit in" when I was about 12 or 13. Did my own thing and went on to become fairly successful.

There are scores of famous people who have AS.

Einstein is believed to have had it. Some say both Jobs and Gates have it.

I"m a A.S.A.H
What"s you excuse?

AS Humor, LOL

Pete

I've met her; very interesting person. She is descended from one of the Grandin brothers that came to ND and operated a bonanza farm in the early pioneer days. The town of Grandin, ND, is named for them. Grandin is 27 miles north of Fargo. It's the town where we went to church. The family farm is 7.5 miles SW of Grandin.
