Alaska is one place I have to visit before I die. The natural beauty is just incredible.

I live about 6 1/2 hrs drive north & west of Skagway. I really depends on what time of year you go. You could go to the base of the chilcoot trail or you could even climb the chilcoot trail if you have time. The Whitepass train is breath taking in the spring, fall & winter. Forget the summer (cruise ships) There is a real good museum if you have a car. Go to Dyea if you have a chance. You can walk a easy paved trail in Juneau & get within 100 yards from a glacier. In late Nov you can see the worlds largest eagle gathering. (Approx 3200) There is LOTS & LOTS to do. These are just a FEW. I am glad you are asking these questions BEFORE you go as some people go places & miss so many things because they didn't do there home work first. Email is open. Gerald

My wife and I and her two sisters and there husbands did the land/cruise tour in July. We flew into Anchorage and then Fairbanks. Stayed at the Danali Lodge and did the Danali park tour and some other things. Then a train/dinner ride to Whitier where boarded The Island Princess. Sailed to Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan and then on to Vancouver, BC

Seen some great sights. There are some good tours and some great tours. Example, We panned for gold in a stream. But some of the gold panning tours just give you a bucket with sand in it and a water trough, no stream in sight.

Make sure you have a passport.

I am not a vacationer, but for me the cruise was to long. And to make matters worst when we went to fly home, Air Canada said our seats were cancelled and resold. So we had to stay an extra day in Vancouver.

Now we are fighting with to get our expenses covered. We did have travel ins.

Have a good time and take lots of pics.

My son is a park ranger there. We went up last year. He drove us around in a motor home we rented for 2 weeks. We flew over the glaciers up around Telkeetna ak. It was a good time. We saw a lot. It is truly beautiful that pictures do no justice. Here is a shot of the glaciers.
