OT Identity Theft

My dad just had his wallet stolen yesterday with his drivers license, credit card and SS card in it. They used the cc to buy gas.
I wanted to ask if this has happened to any one else and what you may have done to stop the ID theft? He went to the Social Security office but they told him he needed proof from a doctor or hospital of who he was. His tax papers are not good enough.

Go to the county clerks office and tell them you lost your DL and you need a new one. They should have your last photo on the computer, which is easy to identify you. Get a new DL and problem solved.

First and foremost make out a police report for both the lost wallet and the unauthorized purchase on his dime. Notify all the credit card companies he does business with as well as his bank. Should probably change his bank account number at the very least. He'll have to jump through whatever hoop the government makes him to re-establish or get a new SS card. IIRC you can request you credit report be locked meaning it can't be accessed without his permission and you can request you be notified any time it is accessed. Your local law enforcement agency should be able to guide him on what steps he should take to protect himself from further damage and restore his good name.

My wife gave some scumbag all her info, from a fake bank account. After that happened, She signed up with Lifelock around 100.00, but they notify her if someone tries to open a charge account in her name. Stan

alert cops, credit card issuers, 3 major credit reporters (?). Report the cards stolen/stop them. Keep the police report handy... The quicker you act, the less damage....

Everybody should make copies of all cards, licenses, etc in their wallets and have report/cancellation numbers at hand.
I found out that you don't have to cancel a card on the first call (in case you just misplaced your stuff), just put a temp block and alert.

Hope he gets things straightened out soon.

I doubt if the person that stole it wanted the ID, Probably just the credit card and cash. I don't know as I have ever shown my SS card to anyone. I sure don't carry it. I guess if it was me I'd cancel the credit card and get a new drivers license. You should have a duplicate card.

They may not have wanted it but I bet they know someone that will pay good money for a complete ID. Low lifes tend to hang out togather.

You must be a younger person that does not yet have Medicare. It's almost a requirement of us older folks to carry our Medicare card with us because who knows what's going to happen and when. As Greenmech mentioned above, your Medicare number is your Social Security number in bold black numbers just below your name on the card we carry in our billfolds.

Hello John B,
A valid passport is an excellent form of ID.
Stop all the credit cards and put an alert at any of the 3 credit card buros? Spelling.
One of them is all you need to report it to, they will notify the other 2, Experian is one that I remember. Also close any bank accounts.
A licence with a foto ID is also what he should get to replace the one he lost.
Medicare cards will be replaced ones he gets the proper ID for his SS card.
Guido.
