OT-Easy way to chase a Bat away

I was sitting at my computer in my office when a Bat flew past me about 3 feet away. I never had one that close and inside my home before.. So I got up and opened both front and rear doors and turned on all lights. Nothing changed the way the Bat was flying around and around the inside of my home untill I picked up a flat paint stick for stiring paint in a 5 gal pails. I knew Bats use their built in "Radar" nature gave them so I started Fanning the paint stick very fast back & forth using ONLY wrist action. I tried to keep the "Swept" area broadside to the bat so that he got max reflection back from my Fanning paint pattle. Instant responce from the bat. He really did NOT like that fast Fanning paint pattle in front of him. He quickly tried to turn away and fly as far away as he could get.I just kept chasing him toward an open door. It took maybe one minute to get him out side. Try it sometime. I think an electric fan on higher speed might also work. Sioux Falls S.D. TV news reported an increase of Bats around this area of the country bothering people.. Maybe extra dry conditions have reduced their food supply? ( That paint pattle I used is 21 inch by 1 and half wide.) Nice break away from the computer..
I've never seen an airplane maneuver as well as that Bat. He had total control of his flight path.. ag.

I use a fishing net and one quick swipe and some welding gloves to capture and crush the little bugger once hey are inside my house. No moisture and no insects have led to no bats this year.

be real careful about touching bats. At least in our area (MA), you pretty much have to assume they're rabid - and treat them that way.

On a side note -

My brother rented a house for vacation on cape cod. Kept chasing bats out of the house for a few days. Finally looked under one of the beds in the kid's room and there was a whole ... flock? ... of bats hanging from the bottom of the bed.

The entire family had to go for the long series of rabies shots.

Doctor said even though nobody knows they got bitten - bats will bite at night with such a tiny mark you'd never know it.

And with rabies he said - much better safe than sorry. By the time you see any symptoms of it, it's too late to do anything, next stage is death.

Badmitton racket does wonders on the little flying rats. Grandma's old farm house had bats in it often. Gramdpa had a tennis racket he found somewhere he would smack them and it was lights out for them. He said if they stay outside where them belong they were ok, but if they invaded his house they got to go.

The trouble with bats, as they are circling they pee. I have stains all over my shop from those things. About the only way to get rid of them is to kill them. Find out where they get in, and close up your building as tight as possible. If you can't keep them out, find where the roost, use exhaust from a motor it works wonders. I know they eat bugs, but I would rather have a few more bugs, than a shop full of bats.Stan

I"ve been a church usher for over 35 years, had one bat flying inside a few years ago. Few weeks ago, noticed some little black thing walking down the aisle...went into a pew, came back out. This is during the sermon. Padre looks a bit quizzical as I went up the aisle with the collection basket- waaay too early for that. Dropped the basket over the bat, but now what? Wasn"t about to touch the critter! Found a magazine at a nearby entrance and slid the batbasket over it........took it outside. Other usher said bats cannot fly from the ground- they need something they can jump down from.

just fyi, went to tsc today, and picked up a copy of their magazine called "out there". in it theres a plan for a bat nesting box.might check it out and put a couple outside your house/shop. might get the best of both worlds if you could keep them outside.

All: So I did a littkle checking.. BlueCross/Shield sez tell your Doctor and prefers not to give any advise. My Doctors RN-nurse sez that the only test is to have the animal or Bat to test.. No animal or Bat makes for no test which makes for no medical shots.. So it is "Roll the dice" and wait..
In my case I do not recall contact with the Bat at all..
Thanks Sutton for info..
