grass seed?

Most of my yards are cooked. Some may come back. Other, the weeds will take over.

The last two times I planted, I did it late in the year, winter seeding, and had good luck getting it started. The last 3 summers have been so dry and I can't irrigate all my yards.

My perinnal rye seemed to do ok in the shade, cooked in the sun.

My zoysia is fried. There is a good change to come back.

If there is any up side, most of my weeds are fried too.

What do you recommend for a dry hot summer?

Doesn't look like you're getting a lot of help here George!
It took me 10 years to get a full, green lawn in the front, full sun
part of my yard.
There is a contractor blend of grass seed that is supposed to work in
full sun.
That's what finally got things going out here, but I'm not sure
even that would have survived this drought when first planted.

nothing will grow in those conditions unless you can water and water a lot, my experience with grass, which is a lot, is try some k-31, fescue, this is a grass designed for harsh areas, ive used it for 20 years after trying about everything else, i will still take lots of water to get it up, but once up it will usually stay thru drought, and while it will be brown until it gets water, then it will green up, ive even got this stuff growing in road base course,around the roads in a subdivision, i know the dirt in the road base was sterile, as i hauled it in there and i know where it came from, today you cant even tell the basecourse is there its just grass those area only get watered by rain which the last 10 years isnt much but it is still there, if watered regularly it makes a nice lush lawn , i got the same stuff planted in a recreational area which does get watered and you couldnt really ask for a nicer lawn

Drop by your local golf course and talk to the head grounds keeper. He can tell you what to plant.

as near as i can tell here,nothing!,unless of course you can find some way of making a yard of broomweed or snake weed, that seems to be holding up well. anything without water here is brown,but most will come back i think.even the bluestem and buffalo grass crunches when you walk on it,but if you dig down in it it still has a few green stems so it will survive most likely. jack your mower up and put it up on blocks,and be glad you dont have to be out in the heat. till we get some good rains your wasting time worrying about it! im going to start mowing pastures next weekend.to see if i can get a jump on the weeds,but Im going to just use a sycle mower and lay the old growth down. small chance of rain this week but im not counting on much.

George, that zoysia is generally best, here in MD. If I were you I would core aerate, and seed with Lesco Transition Blend Tall Fescue seed, or any improved tall fescue blend. Aerate, in September, seed immediately after. Remember to cut new grass with a sharp blade, and never cut lower than 1/3 of the leaf off, at one time. Height should be 3-4" in hot weather, never lower, 'cept in Zoysia.

Is terre haute the zoysa capital? relatives over there all had it at one time or another.

Ive always had good luck w buying seedand fert from one of the landscaping companies we use through work. You may try that route - they would know the local soils, etc.

Buy usually the sure fire way to get grass to grow is to put in a gravel drive....
