Removing a drive in grease fitting

Anybody have any luck removing drive in grease fittings? One on the spindle shafts on my JD LX 188 deck is wore enough it won't take grease, need to get it out and replace it. Not sure what happened to it, Looks like 1/2 of the grease nipple is wore off, like that when I bought it. I want to get this finished so I can start working on my JD 70 tractor. Thanks, Chris

Never had any luck drilling them out. They are usually hardened and start spinning in the hole if/when the drill bit catches.

Little more trouble but I usually remove the shaft and drive them thru to the inside.

I have removed plenty of them. Usually just put a pair of small vise grips on the ball end, lay a flat bar stock, wrench or whatever against under the vise grips and push the vise grips down with a little wiggle and they pop out. Alemite makes a set of install tools for the staight and 45 degree fittings.

I always use a pair of vice grips, attached to a slide hammer. You can get the kit, cheap, many places, it has a screw adapter, that replaces the screw adjuster, in the vice grip, and connects to the slide hammer bar. 3 whacks, and it's generally out, in one piece!
