Long 2510 questions again

Thanks to all who replied. What are the weak points and stuff to really check on them? How many hours are they good for? (engine)

If you"re looking at one to buy, bring coolant test strips (assuming it"s a diesel) and check the antifreeze. Might also see if any moisture is coming out of the breather tube. If any of the above is bad, you may have a liner leaking due to cavitation or a pitted block - would have saved me LOTS if I had done the above when I bought my 2520!

All Longs were diesels AFIK.

Check the clutch for slipping. Some clutch parts are not availiable.

The Long is a direct injection diesel and should start immediately. One problem with poor starting or running is a clogged up air system. The air filter intake is in front of the radiator and the fan pulls dirty air to the air filter. After many years the air intake can get clogged up and require scraping out. This is not the same issue as the oil bath air filter mesh needing cleaning out. I assume you know not to clean the steel wool like mesh with gasoline and immediately crank the engine. The gas fumes cause an unregulated fuel supply and the engine can run away. The pto selector has a ground speed pto which works when the tractor is in gear and the clutch is out. No live power with it. Moving the pto gear lever the opposite to independent gives an independent pto. There is a ind. pto clutch lever on the left of the tranmission case. Do not leave it up, or the pto clutch disengaged for over 5 minutes as this causes excess wear on the clutch throw out bearing. Disengage the pto gear lever mentioned above and operate the tractor with the pto clutch lever down. Check and see if all this stuff works as it is supposed to.

The swinging drawbar assemble is fastened to the frame with 2 large bolts that go in from the sides, at the top of a flat housing. (frame is not really the correct word as that is the rear of the rear end housing) Anyway, be sure the 2 bolts are not loose enough to have wallowed out the threaded holes as the cure is to buy a new flat housing which might not be availiable. If you get the tractor, keep those bolts tight, but be aware they are just going into a soft cast iron housing, so don't get wrench happy.

Jocco: It seems like you really want to buy this Long tractor. So just look it over like any other tractor. They really did not have that many standard problems. They just did not have any company or dealer support in the US. I do mean ZERO support. They would give just about anyone that had a pulse a dealership. Then the guy would sell a few tractors and then go broke or quit selling them. So they where orphans when they where just a few years old in most places.

I do mean it might take you years to find some parts for the things. Some models are better than others. Some models where built by Zetor. The one I got educated on was a 2610 and it was made in Brasov, Romania. The starter was Russia made and the nose exploded. We could not find anything that was even close to the same. IT WAS not a Bosch like some on here have told you.

Here is a news article about them:

Long Manufacturing built its first tractor in 1948. The company, however, soon stopped building their own and began importing tractors from Uzina Tractorul Brasov (UTB) and some Landinis. Long filed for bankruptcy in 1985, but returned by 1987 after a reorganization. In 1998, Long Agribusiness was purchased by the Escort Group of India. The Long name was dropped in favor of the Farmtrac brand. Farmtrac North America stopped business in late 2008.

So if it is real cheap then you go for it. Just remember that you could have a real big paper weight if something major goes wrong.
