Got the shaft

PTO shaft that is. Baling hay for my neighbor today. Made 61 bales, kicked out the 61st one, baler started back up and the PTO shaft on my NH TN75S broke. Nice sharp cracking sound. But at least it broke outside the housing, about 1 inch of shaft left sticking out of housing. Took the baler home hooked it up to the Ford 7700 and baled the last 5 bales. Lucky that was the last hay I had on the ground. Have 5 more jobs to go but I guess that's the good news. First time I've looked forward to getting the shaft. Dealer says should be in Monday or Tuesday.

Right! Always thankful when something like that happens and there are no injuries. A little bent sheet metal on the baler. The whole driveshaft whipped down and backward. Good thing the clutch on the baler was engaged which actually helped to stop the driveshaft.

(quoted from post at 20:26:33 08/09/12) IF that was the tractor pto shaft, better lubricate the baler hookup. Something caused the shaft to break!

Plastic (maybe tin) covers aren't required/used?? Not necessarily a requirement here, but if you get tangled up in one without it, the insurance won't pay.......

Actually I'm kind of a grease freak. Any equipment I have that has a zerk gets the required shots of grease before it hits the field. My guess is just metal fatigue on the shaft. It broke clean. Can lay a square on the break, perfect 90 degrees.

All the guards & covers were in place and were in good shape.

Insurance, Hmmmm. On my 25 yr old baler?

Do have health insurance & a blanket liability to cover me & any other 3rd party person or property.
