1989 Ford ranger truck problem

Have a friend who owns this truck She is an older woman on disability. Any how it was running just fine and then pretty much all at once it started to lose power and she also said she saw red stuff flying out the back. Hard to say what that was. Any how it will no start and she says it sounds normal as for trying to start it. Has a 3.0 V-6 and a 5 speed so any idea what to look for when I go and look at it. Ya I know not a lot to go by but till I drive up to look this is all I can say. She did say coolant level was a bit low but the oil still looked ok
Thanks for any ideas

This advice doesn't really fit with "losing power" or "red stuff out the back", but it does fit with the no start issue.
Make sure you can hear the fuel pump running when you turn the key on, not cranking.
Should only run for a couple seconds, but it should run.
If that's not running it could be the fuse to it, the relay to it, the safety shut down relay, or Ford's notorious safety switch to shut the fuel pump off in the event of a roll over that just needs to be reset.
If it keeps running, look for a fuel leak.
Fuel filter also possible.
Let us know what you find!

Fuel filter, I have a 99 F150 V6 that did the same thing and it was a plugged fuel filter causing it. They are a pain to change if you plan to do it yourself you will have to buy a special tool to do it.

My first thought is the O2 sensor, it can make one run real bad and eventually not start. Need to know if the idiot light was on or not. Do you have a code reader? My 88 plugs in under the hood, not sure on the 89. It will tell you what she needs to know more than likely.
I love my 88, but it seems like I'm always working on it. Maybe because I kick it's azz more than I should!
Red stuff coming out the back? Fire coming out the exhaust from backfiring???????

Old, first check if she has any exhaust gas coming out the tail pipe. The red stuff may be a grenaded cat that has plugged the exhaust system. This will cause it not to run, excessive back pressure. If this isn't the problem follow what the others have said.

I don't know nothing but no body answered the red stuff.. Only red stuff i can think of is anti-freeze from a blown head gasket/ intake manifold.

Could be the red fluid she seen is transmission fluid and her loss of power was due to transmission slippage.Just a thought.

I"d got with the cat converter ideal too,, the red was coming out when driving down the road? just loosen exhaust and see if it will start

Rich, Your knowledge on old tractors will come in valuable here. That is very wide open to all kinds of responses. You know what an engine that cranks well should sound like. If it does, check for blue spark. If it has blus spark that jumps a 1/4 inch gap, check fuel delivery. If uncertain spray carb cleaner into the intake for several seconds, reconnect the intake tube and try to start it. Let us know what you find.

Ya my plan is to check for fuel and spark but it is a tad new for me LOL. Been doing the small stuff on this truck for a few months now like brakes etc. She was here the day it died on her learning to shoot a 20 gauge shot gun she had just got for getting rid of her armadillo problem and now this has happened

Yes I have seen them use ATF in the transmission that where standard but that would still not be the engine start problem and I do not think this one has that since I have in the past check it for her

Might not be a bad idea to pull a plug and check the gap. I've done no starts traced to excessive plug gaps because they wore too much due to lack of maintenance.

Ya this poor old truck does not see much as for repair except what is a have to type of thing but it leaks a lot of oil so that causes other problems but lack of oil was not the problem on it
