JD 425 lawn tractor- running issues

I tried on the Gardden Tractor board, but it's kinda slow getting a response over there.

I use my parents JD 425 to cut my lawn, do all the maint. on it, etc... so I don't have to buy my own $5000-$10,000 lawn mower quite yet(2 acres of lawn so I'm not buying a cheap model w/ a 48" deck)

Originally, it wouldn't start. After one guy made me think of it on the other board, it turned out that one of the kids on the farm pulled out the PTO switch. I texted Dad while I was at work so he checked it, sure enough it started.

Now it'd only run for a few minutes, maybe a few seconds, then die. It would start right back up and do the same thing. I looked at it, ran it a bit, and it did the same thing to me. Now I can't get it to start again, but now it'll crank, it just won't fire up.

Any ideas here? I'm drawing a blank, and after cutting my lawn with my brother's 36" walk behind skag w/ jungle wheels, I really want to get this lawn tractor going again. I miss the 60" deck.

you don't say how long since it has been used - we haven't mowed here since April. I would check for water in the gas.

When mine acted like that it was the Time Delay Module on the side of the motor - part number AM128906. I think it cost about $30 and the new one was an updated design. The dealer told me it was a common problem on these tractors.

I replaced that module a few years ago, and before I did it would run for 20-30 min. or so till it got warm, then it wouldn't start until it cooled off. BTDT, got the T-shirt. Seems to be different symptoms.

As far as when it was last run, was less than a month ago. It's been dry here, but not as dry as other places. We've recently gotten over 6" in the last few weeks, so now my lawn grew like crazy. I got it ruff cut now, but I'm gonna have to cut it again within the week.

I did pull the fuel line off before and then after the filter, and turned the key on. I pumped out about a gallon of gas and then put the hose back on. No difference.

I had a 318 do that and it was coil under the flywheel. I know these have different engines but it shows a pulsing coil on the 425 in jdparts #5.

I had to replace what is called an ignitor on my Kawasaki equipped Deere lawn tractor a month and a half ago. Not cheap but certainly solved the problem.

Don- Time delay module was common, sounds like your
aware of that. Also check with a small mirror in
the fuel tank to be sure that short length of fuel
line didn't blow. Very common issue too. That
sounds very possible if your only running for
seconds and it dies.

I have the same tractor.
You can here the fuel pump run on that 425. Listen for it. You can see if it is running by looking at the surg in the fuel filter. Determine for certein if it is fuel or spark by pulling plug. Put a once of gas in the cylinder and crank. Ground the plug and crank.

Just had the exact same thing happen with a Craftman. Had spark, and fuel to the carb. Took carb apart and had a plug just before the jets.

I have a Simplicity Legacy XL with a 27hp Kawasaki engine. It was doing the exact same thing. I checked fuel pump, spark fuel filter ect ect.
My neighbor and I tore into the carburator and found the anti-backfire selonid was bad. It looks like a double A battery, only half as long stick out the carburator with a single wire running to it. Mine was shot. It would not let the gas into the carb. Called local Simplicity dealer not a stock item. ($135.00 to order one in)
Kawasaki dealer didn"t stock on either ($98.00)
We just snipped the plunger off with a wire cutter and screwed back into the card. Has worked ever since!!!
You might experience a "back-fire" after you shut off the engine. Mine does not.

Be careful with the carb bolts and all the surrounding linkages. Alumumin to Alumumin and steel bolts are PIA
Good luck

I pulled the fuel line off after the filter and pumped out a gallon or so the other day, so I know the pump is working. I haven't had a chance to look at it since.
