If you have a digital thermostat that uses batteries try replacing the batteries if the system stops working and the display on the thermostat is blank. Most of them only use the batteries save the settings in case of a power failure, but i discovered yesterday (after about 10 minutes of trouble shooting) that the Honeywell thermostat on my mothers system actually uses the batteries to operate the thermostat rather than just storing the settings.

Sorry for posting something this far off topic, but I thought maybe I could save someone some sweating.

John,

You are correct. We found this out at my work two years ago when the weather was sub-zero. Our office/lobby portion of the building was not heated over the weekend... fortunate that there is no plumbing in the area that this small furnace heats, or we would have had a major mess/expense.

So I would only go with a thermostat that is hardwired to electricity - but has a battery for backup. Battery ONLY is a bad deal, especially in cold climates.

Some of them are able to run off the 24 volt system AND/OR the battery. A jumper must be set in order to select the source operating voltage. In cases where the 24 volt source is a bit to high the system will not work properly and the batteries must be used as a power source for the thermostat.
