I went and looked at the low spot were the calf was and there was tracks right up to it. We have a salt water injection well on our land and somebody comes and checks it every morning. Well I called the company up and they said you will be took care of we will send you a check . The guy must have said he hit it and it went into the mud hole were I found it.The calf still does not move its back end, I may have to shoot it. |

| I've got one here that has me shaking my head. Had a lone stragler Angus cow calved Wednesday. Thought that night she didn't really look like she'd been sucked. Thursday morning I was pretty sure of it. Mixed up some powdered colostrum and bottle fed it,sucked it right down. That night, drank about 2/3s of the milk replacer I gave it. Friday morning, drank about half. I tubed some electrolites in it yesterday afternoon, mixed up some more colostrum last night, tried to feed it about 5 o'clock, wouldn't take it. Same thing at 7:30. This morning,it took several rest stops, but he drank it cold. Wife said she saw the little devil sucking another cow from behind (not it's mother) this afternoon. Wouldn't take the bottle at all tonight. Tried at 5 and again at 8. His eyes look good, not like he's dehydrated. He's getting around. After I fed him this morning he got right up bunting his mother in the neck. Don't know what's gonna become of him. His mother stays with him, acts threatening to me when I try to feed him. Sometimes it sure is fun to be in the cattle business. |

| rrlund: When I get one that way I have a single old barn stanchion that I have mounted on a set of posts in the pasture. It is around my holding/catch pen. I just run the momma cow in the stanchion. Lock her in and get the calf an make/let him suck. Depending how the old cow acts I may let her go or keep her in the stanchion for a few days to make sure the calf is sucking. It is easier to feed/water her than mess around with the calf. Plus the momma usually will get used to the calf and then you only have a few days of fooling with her, rather than having a bottle calf to mess with. |

| I've had four that I've had to bottle feed this year, including a pair of twins. The average has been four days before they get ahold of the mama. Looks like this one was less than 4,but got ahold of the wrong cow. I don't know if he can be sneaky enough to survive that way though. I'll keep it up with the bottle until I'm sure he's either sucking mama or that somebody else is standing still for him. I had one last year that I fed one day less than 5 weeks before he found mamas teat. I got rid of her and a few other big bagged old bats and thought my troubles were over. Guess not. |
