On any steel consider what you need for the job. Often the more un-common thicknesses are considerably more expensive than the common thicknesses for the same size tubing. This is sometimes a local thing wheras maybe 2X2x1/4" wall is used by several operations. So you go to a supplier and want 2x2x3/16" wall and find it is the same or more expensive than the 1/4" wall material.

Trailer hitch tubing fits in that category and is quite a bit more expensive because it is a special size.

Why don't you just list the price being asked and the wall thickness? It would make it a whole lot easier to answer your question. You could also call around to steel suppliers or scrap yards. Steel suppliers usually have a minimum buy of $75 or more but scrap yards often sell new steel in any length. Some welding shops will sell steel as well.

Take a look at McMaster Carr. I buy quite a bit of metal stock from them. They are about the most competitive I've found.

Bought some stuff from their place local to me in Charlotte. I got the pieces I needed, in the lengths I needed for just under what it would have cost me per foot for a 20 foot stick. Given that I only needed 3 feet of one of the pieces and it was still $90, I'd hated to have had to buy a full 20' stick. Overall they were great folks to deal with and I would definately buy from them again.
