Chain saw/Generator ? posted on yt Ford by mistake

Made 2 mistakes, latest is posting this ? on YT Ford when I wanted to post it here. Hope I don't get in trouble for double posting.

Second mistake I bought a poulan chain saw. Didn't run 2 gallons of gas through it before it died. Took it back to Store where I bought it, they had it for a month and did nothing with it. They gave me a refund.

What I'm looking for is a powerful electric chain saw. I don't use a chain saw very often. Electric saws aren't hard to start. They don't smoke up the air. Don't have to worry about the gas going bad. Don't have carb issues. Who owns an electric saw and you would buy another one like it?

I have 250 ft of 12g extension cord, but I may want to use the electric saw in a remote location . So I want to buy is a small generator to run the chain saw. Don't want a 2 cycle generator. Don't think the inverter generators will have enough fuel savings to merit me buying one in my life time, I'm 63. Also want it to be able to power up the well when I lose electricity, which is not very often. One well has a 1/2 hp pump that uses 10a, 1200w. I'm sure the lock rotor amps is 3-5 times more. My other well has a 3/4 hp pump which I could run it on 220 by moving a few wires around. I could power up the pumps after my water pressure goes to zero to reduce the starting power.

So who has a small generator that they would buy another like it? I'm thinking a 2-3,000 watt range.

Hopefully the saw and generator are made in the USA, but pigs may have to fly before I find one.

I bought a Remington electric pole saw that the chain saw can be detached from it. Works good both ways until the switch on the pole went bad. But the chain saw still works good and it is light weight.

Had a Craftsman electric chain saw. Ran it about 5 minutes and the plastic gears stripped. Took it back and got a new one which I didn't use for a year or two. Finally used it. Ran 5 minutes and the gears stripped. No longer warranted. Gear NLA. Threw it away.

You might want to check out the new battery operated chainsaw made by Oregon. Then you wouldn't have to buy a generator. Kinda expensive but sounds like a good saw.

Too bad about the Poulan. Have bought a couple Poulans (big and small) and run the heck out of them with no problems. I don't use ethanol gas in them or any small/older engine. A friend that works with me has an electric pole saw and we used it to trim a couple of lower limbs that we couldn't reach with the saws and didn't want to mess with the loader or ladder. Worked OK, but kind of a pain hauling the generator around. The nice portable Honda was a little to small and had to use the B&S powered middle size one which is pretty heavy for one person to load in the truck. I liked the pole saw enough to buy a gas powered one. My 1000 watt Honda is too small for a saw, but the 2000 watt or 3000 watt units are still pretty portable and would work well. I would go with the larger one to be sure it had enough capacity.

I had the same problems with a Poulan, carried it back to Wallyworld, got my money back and bought a Stihl 025, couldn't start it very easily because of high compression. I sold that one to a friend, bought a Stihl 250 MS with the easy start system and I love it, but I'm going to sell it and probably but the Oregon battery powered one. Can't run a gas powered one any more because I had to have a pacemaker implanted last fall. Both my cardioligist and pacemaker manufacturer said gas powered chain saws are a no-no.

If either one is made in the US, they are most likely to be the worst saw/generator on the market! You'll need more than 3000 watts to start a 3/4 HP pump. No electric chain saw made will come close to a good gas powered chain saw. You're trying to do this on a budget and that's a recipe for failure. Get a good gas chain saw and if you look after it, it will give you years of service.

Before purchasing a generator, take time to think of the largest thing you will be running with it, either in amps or watts. Then buy a unit that will deliver at least 25% more than that.

What makes you think I have to work on a budget? Currently looking at a Rigid 3500w Subaru generator. Home depot sells them for $500. It comes with a 3 year warantee. I would buy a 4 stroke chainsaw in a heart beat...to date no one makes one. I have a 4 stroke husky varnie weed wacker...Costs over $500. It's the most powerful weed wacker I've ever used. How many people spend $500+ on a weed wacker that live on a budget?

No one, so far, has recommended anything made in the USA, most likely because pigs can't fly. When it comes to buying an electric saw, I want the biggest and the best, the cost is no problem.

Perhaps, you didn't read the part where I have a lung condition and 2 strokes are out...

Generator will be used to pump water when the power is out...That's the biggest load I plan to power up.

George here is a Stihl electric chain saw. I have two different friends that have this model to cut the poles in pole barns. They like them and say that they work well. The one fellow has cut small fire wood with his and said it worked fine. They are not much cheaper than a gas saw. They will be right around $500.

The light cheap Remington and Echo electric chain saws are pure junk. I was given a New Remington as a gift. It set on a shelf in the shop for almost three years. One day I needed some wood blocks cut and thought I would give it a try. Filled it with bar oil and made three cuts in a pine 6 x 6 and the drive gears stripped. I pitched it into the junk wagon.

I am watching for a good one myself just to use around the shop/house/barns.

For a portable generator I have a Honda EU3000. I love it. It is not cheap but it works great and it is light and quite. Again you get what you pay for.

You will be much happier tying the generator to electrical service with this.

Motor starting? The nameplate amperage on the generator must be at least 2X and better 3X the rated full load amps of the load. Figuring watts gets many folk into trouble.

Geeze George, if money is no object then put the local tree service guys number on your speed dial and have it done with.

Why is that exactly? The battery powered saw is going to produce just as big of an electromagnetic field as the gas powered saw.

Not being combative, but welding was the only thing that was of any interest to my Cardioligist. Even then they called St Judes and talked to designers and they said try it for 5 sec. and wait 30sec. repeat a couple of times. If there are no ill effects, increase weld time. Stop if there was any dizziness.

I think I read that Stihl chain saws are made in the same place everything is made, CHINA.

As for a generator, I'm going to my local lawn and garden store where I buy mower parts and see I can get for the generators. Also see if he sells Stihl electric saws. Can't seem to find them on line.

http://www.stihl.com/STIHL-power-tools-A-great-range/Chain-saws-saw-chains-guide-bars/0150/Electric-chain-saws.aspx 2.2KW

http://www.stihlusa.com/products/battery-and-electric/battery-and-electric-saws/mse220/ 1.7KW

2.2KW would be 18.3amp on 120V.

I don't know where the electric saws are made but the professional grade gas saws are made here in the USA.

Really. I have a pacemaker and combination defibrilator and no body told me about chain saws being a no-no.

Northern tool has some 3kw generators for less than 400 bucks and that WORX saw you're lookin at should be a keeper...

Check out amazon <300 buck generators... China is china no matter where you get it...
I bought a 3kw (230 volt) generator at the ALDI (grocery) store 10 years ago for 220+/- bucks. Have never had the spark plug out of it, it sets outside in the weather all year (will change this year), fill the tank and fill again when empty (??? months/years). Only thing I replaced was the recoil rope/spring. Starts on the 2nd or 3rd pull and does fine.

Have you thought about a power inverter instead of a generator) no pulling a rope or breathing fumes.

http://www.harborfreight.com/2000-watt-continuous-4000-watt-peak-power-inverter-95596.html

I have a couple or 3... 50 watt for running hair clippers on the pasture (foal branding time), a 200 watt one that someone gave me that I use to take up space, and a 2kw one that I use with either the tractor or car to run a sump pump to transfer water.

My Stihl chain saw is made in VA.Lots of bum info on the internet.Poulan saws are not worth bringing home.I put a new fuel line on my saw in 15 years,no other repairs.Cant see the logic in running a generator to run an electric chain saw.Hard enough to limb trees without having to drag extention cords around.Every one I know who works in the woods here for a living uses Stihl.
saws.Smoke is not an issue with 50 to 1 fuel mix.Im 75 and use a chain saw and run a band saw mill.

I don't understand the logic here...

If you don't want another engine to cause problems, then a gas generator is not the solution.
