Just to see how bad it looks from the air.

Thought it looked bad from the ground. It"s worse from the air.

There is 75 acres in this field of corn. Left field and straight ahead fields are beans and are still holding their color. The field above to left of my house is corn as well but just a little lower ground. That is the air strip at the very top.

Second picture is on both sides of the airport we took off from. All my Corn. Here again the green fields are beans.

Oh my...

That is terrible... Hope your crop insurance covers your bills for the next 18 months. The $17 beans might help a little if they make anything.

How many acres do you farm in total?

Don't know what to say, I feel bad for you folks that did not get the rain this year.
Here (east central WI) my crops look good but is getting dry also, timely rains haved saved me all summer but now the rain seems to go around us. The corn is trying set cobs but I fear the moisture just isn't there.

It's same all over Gary. The only corn I saw at all was between Marysville KS and St Joe and it was not good, just fair and burning up. Most guys can leave the combine in the shed. The beans are still green but with this heat they are not going to set pods. Milo is toast too.

I grew up on a farm and have been a pilot for along time and often look at crops from above. The dead spots are getting much larger in the corn fields of Monroe and Leanwee Co. Michigan. Most of the corn has a sickly look to it and the beans are beginning to look bad also, never have seen it look this bad before. A few areas have gotten some rain and at least looks green.

Those lines of trees are along the edge of 5 or 6 drainage ditches. The land on the left out of the photo is hilly and this area is flat in the photo. The water runs out of the hills after heavy rains and out of side hill springs. Drainage tile also dump into the ditches.

There are 7 houses nestled in the clumps of trees. So those trees are for shade. Some of the trees are also planted wind breaks.

That area you see is some of the most heavy tree area we have around here. East of me there is only 2 woody drainage ditches in 6 miles.

Some of the trees on the far right are part on the government owned land that is part of the Coralville Reservoir Wildlife area.

Gary,

Looks a lot different from when I saw it last. Is that lake very low? Bet they have a good reserve of space for possible flooding rains.

What's really discouraging is how bad a good crop looks from the air!
I learned to fly from a neighbors grass strip.
Looking at corn from above really impressed me to want to go to ultra narrow (20") rows. When I went from four 30" rows three years ago(replaced planter and combine) I looked around, but there were no existing 20" row machines for the small farmer. So I'm still at 30".

Gary, are the pictures aligned west to east (top to bottom)? Is the top of the pictures looking to the west? 'Just trying to get my bearings on the runway headings.

Yes both photos are looking west.

Top photo is just north of the bottom one looking west. Runway is slightly SE to northwest. Heading is 15 degrees on north looking to the SE.

How did you know it was looking west? Shadows?

Gary

Why not go 22 inch? Sugar beets are in 22 inch rows, and many MN farmers switched to 22 for corn/beans. Planters, cultivators, combines...all 22 inch. Downside is need for narrow (14 inch) tires. Some run triple 14s. google keltgen tall tires.

It just would have been unusual for a primary runway in Iowa to be aligned essentially East/West due to the prevailing winds. Thus I concluded (guessed) the directions of the pictures. I used to fly those things....absolutely loved it. Had to quit.....the most expensive hobby I ever got into. Wow, is it ever. I had all the ratings other than flight instructor....and was working on that. I even had my own runway here on the farm. I had a 1600 ft grass strip and flew my 172 in and out of here almost daily. One day I just said to heck with it. I also liked to drink beer.....and the two didn't mix. It was cheaper and safer to just stay on the ground from then on. Now it's one of those "braggin' rights" deals. I learned how to do it and nobody can take it away from me. In retrospect, the only reason I wanted to learn how to fly was because I was absolutely terrified of flying. I wanted to get over that. And did.

Gary, I"m pretty sure what you mean to say is the runway "marking" on the north end is "15". This indicates that the "heading" is 150 degrees. The runway marking on the south end should be 33, indicating 330 degree heading. Right?
