I'm looking for some help. I just purchased a Ford 871 with Select-o speed. The tractor runs great but the tranny is shot. Can I put a 4 or 5 speed in this tractor? the tractor came with a front end loader and backhoe, both of which run great. What manual tranny will fit?

You can install either a 4 or 5 speed transmission from xx1 or four cylinder 2000 or 4000 Ford tractor into your 871.

Note: No 4 speed transmissions of this vintage have live PTO and many 5 speed transmissions do not.

What is wrong with the S-O-S?

If you were to reveal where you are someone may be able to point you to an expert within a few hour's drive.

Thanks for your quick reply. Not really sure what is wrong with the SOS other than the cable is broken, the shifting box is broken and the guy I bought it from told me he had tightened the bands on it to the point the adjustment screws have no more travel. I am going to use this strictly for the back hoe and front end loader so lack of a PTO is not a big deal. I have an 851 I use for the bush hog and a little plowing. I would like to put a 4 speed in.

Four speed transmissions to fit your 871 are plentiful and inexpensive. You should have little trouble finding one.

Thanks again, You said I can use a XX1 transmission, does that include the 641. Someone told the spline count is different on some 641's. Why do I need to limit it to the XX1 transmissions or could a tranny out of an 800 fit? Sorry to be a pain but I am new to this farming thing and my funds are limited to say the least.
