i needed to do a little digging yesterday and a buddy told me to come over and pick up his kubota backhoe, he had just bought it, [ he lives in town and just needed a small utility tractor] so i went and picked it up, hardly a scratch on it looked new, had 155 hours on it, it did the job eventually that i had for it, but i was well, a little dissapointed in the power, not much breakout force on the backhoe, and the only way to lower the front loader bucket was to use the float position, its a 4x4, but when climbing a small hill to dump the dirt, even in low range i didnt know if the thing was going to make it or not, lol, glad i got to use the thing for nothing , but im just wondering how much hp the thing has?

thanks zach, lol thats about what it felt like too, nice little machine, as long as you got some time and the ground isnt too hard, think if i ever bought one id need about 2 or 3 sizes larger, maybe be better to just put a 3 point backhoe on the 45 hp full size jd i have

Is it a hydrastat drive? My 35 hp hydrastat kubota was somewhat weak when new. Its power increased as i placed hours on it. I currently have about 450 hours on it and it runs strong.

Many of the smaller compact tractors look real mean but could not pull your hat off. LOL JD makes a 2010 compact it is about that size. Had a guy at church tell us he would dig the new basement drain with it. The ground was hard and he could only get three feet deep. Two good men with shovels would have beat it.

I have one of those little tractors in a Ford. Bought it with a bad engine and rebuilt it. It is good for planting trees but wouldn;t want to dig a water line with it.

Real common someone borrows something and does not know but here is what you were doing. On the tractor with the backhoe mounted you had the three point lever pulled all the way back and the tractor was in constant pump. That is why the loader would not go down as it was supposed to and also why you had lack of power going up the hill. Take a few minutes and check it out and you will see what I am talking about. May very well be that the guy that own it does not even know that, but it is clearly stated in the operator,s manual to leave the 3 point control lever in mid range with the backhoe mounted. Nothing wrong with the tractor just the operator.
