Hi all.I am looking at an outdoor wood burning furnace centralboiler.it is used not sure how old.will be looking at it tonight.
what should i ask about, and what should i look for.any help would be greatly appreciated.thanks

I have a Central Boiler, have had it for 11 years. Love it. I do realize there will come a time when I am tired of cutting wood, don't want to be tied down, etc. At that point I will sell it. Not sure if the reason for this one for sale, but a possibility.

There are no end of reasons for selling.
the person just don"t want to do it anymore
no longer physiable able to collect wood
neabors complain of smoke
lost his wood lot
and yada yada yada

Stay away from used OWBs. There are new State and Fed regulations on them. The new ones are gasifiers, and burn clean with little to no smoke, and they have controles that maintain a core temp of a minimim of 140F. This temp is very important, because if the boiler runs less than that, condensation occures and they rust out, turning them into scrapiron. CB's were very prone to that. Look into an Econoburn, or a Pro Fab. They are both gassers. The Econoburns have a ceramic burn chamber in them which is better than brick in my opinion. Do your homework, you are talking a 10-15Gs here. Talk to your heating guy and to OWB dealers, and find out what the + and -s are. Google is also your friend, us it.

Make sure it has water in it and check for leaks in the firebox. Don't remember the brand, but one sold locally had a real problem with leaking into the firebox. I welded several.

Yep I saw a used 2011 BMW for sale the other day guess its a piece of junk because the owner didn't want to keep it forever(LOL)Then there was the 1926 Rolls Royce that came up for sale........

With the price of energy going up and up cutting wood actually pays pretty good these days.Plus if you get a large outdoor furnace there's all sorts of free wood around like pallets and wood from clearing lots that developers will deliver to your place around here to keep them from paying the landfill fee.I get all the wood I want from a local flooring company and they bring it to me,bought a PTO driven 3pt Cordwood saw to cut it up.Makes it real easy on the wife.

If I didn't have such people skills and know better, I'd think you were takin things personal and jabbin...
For the case I'm wrong and you are, get a life, it's much more fun......

Saw several in northern Va. on craigslist for sale last fall. They were selling because the price of wood was higher than LP gas. I bought mine used. Guy told me he needed to go to a larger size. When I went to pick it up the new larger Central Boiler was there ready to go on the pad where the Central Boiler I bought came off, when we loaded it up. Mine was 3 years old and I'm in the 3rd year on it since I bought it. I burn year round. Been very pleased with it.

I get my wood at no cost for the wood. I do have to cut , split and fill the stove. I have made modifications to the splitter so I can split wood from the seat. Have a root grapple and that does the rest other than cutting logs up. I hold the logs up and saw to stove length, split and pile from the seat and move the split wood with the grapple to the stove. Only put my hands on the wood when it goes in the stove door.

Check out forestryforum and hearth dot com. both websites have boatloads of information on their forums about boilers. I have heard some very good and some very bad things about Central.

(quoted from post at 06:29:20 07/20/12) Could it possibly be you are a jerk?

Quite possible... Perception is just that.... But...... ow many times do you see (read) me jumping in with a personal jab against someone (first)? Could it possibly be that you are just a monkey see monkey do idiot???? Think the chances of that are higher than me being a jerk... now go play and leave the grownups alone.

BTW.... Thanks for ruinin my people skills....

Have a good weekend.

These furnaces require treatment of the water, if untreated the boiler tank will pit internally similar to cylinder liners on a heavy duty diesel engines.
Suggest you ask for records of treatment and drop a scope in the boiler tank for inspection.

There's a lot of used ones on the market. There not very efficient, smoke up the neighborhood and in some ares they are not allowed now.

You better have a HUGE source of firewood. My son-in-law has one and has a hard time keeping up with its appetite.

If you're getting a used OWB and want to clean up the smoke from it, you should think about getting one of those new devices from Clearstak. I know a lot of people that have installed them and they really cut down on the amount of smoke that comes out of the OWB.

Just a thought.
