Best thread sealant for hydraulic system

I'm having seepage troubles where the quick connects thread into the hydraulic two-way valves.

I'm using Hy-Tran fluid and Permatex #1 on the threads but leakage persists.

I something else better? What?

Give my your advise please.

What type of fittings? O-ring, JIC (flare), Pipe thread, or something else. Permatex shouldn't mess any of these up, but Pipe thread is the only one that needs a sealant and then only under certain conditions.

Threading into a valve with pipethread is one place I would likely use a sealer. When I use sealer on Hydraulics the only thing I use is teflon thread tape.

Are you sure your threads are ok? Is the permitex the same they use on gaskets? That is to thick and does not lube very well. Straight oil would be better.

Thread sealant is not a sealent but just to lubricate the threads so they tighten better. The threads have to seal not the thread lube.

If the connections are pipe threads then the best stuff to use is the teflon in a tube, without the chunks used for normal pipe systems. IF that does not work then you can try teflon tape, but it's use on hydraulic systems is usually frowned upon. It's frowned upon because if not done properly pieces of the tape will end up inside the system and cause problems. IF you use it, make sure you wrap the threads in teh right direction and insure that the tape stays at least a few threads back from the end of the fitting so there is no chance of it getting pushed into the system as the fitting is tightened.

That said if the fittings are straight thread and have o-ring seals, like many valve manifolds are, then all you need to do is get new o-rings for the proper size SAE O-ring fitting size and reseal them.

I use a PTFE compound that I got from local hydraulic supply house. It smells like pipe dope but is real smooth, no lumps.

My best luck sealing high pressure hyd oil in pipe thread is the white pipe thread "pencils" sold at plumbing department at the local hardware store.

Use dowty washers where the fitting screws into the block. You may have a different name for then in the States. They are a metal washer with a rubber sealing washer moulded into them. the rubber protrudes either side of the washer like a lip seal and seals against the spool block and the shoulder of your adapter.

I used a product by loctite a few years back, comes in a toothpaste tube, white paste stuff. Works very well. Be sure all fittings are clean and the valve/pump/cylinder too. The Loctite stuff is called thread sealant.

The omly problem with the Loctite 631 is that it will wash out as the temperature of the oil increases. Wash out results in a system loaded with microscopic (5 micron) teflon trash and eventual leakage.

If all else fails clean it up GOOD and put some JB Weld on it,thread it in and let it cure.I had a fitting in a swing cyl. that the casting had goofed up threads and this was the only way I could stop it.

loctite 545 is a sealant for high pressure hydraulic and pneumatic applications. here is a link, your friendly john deere dealer should have it.

Always liked the Loctite thread sealer. Just a thought, but are your threads in good shape? A lot of problem leaks on pipe threads can be traced to damaged threads, since these seal by crushing or distorting the threads.

If you use Loctite 545, read the directions! Clean all oil thoroughly, apply generously, allow to cure for 24hrs. Good to 10,000 PSI.
