Guys,
Is there any way to test a evaporator coil for leaks without pulling the dash out. There is dye in the system ,but can't get to the coil to check.System will only hold a charge for a couple of hours.I can get to the heater core, but the evap. sits above that and is not visible.Any way to run apressure test on it.It's a 99 Ford Contour.

With a leak that serious, an electronic checker should squeel radically in the outlet vent! (or where ever it is leaking) Jim

Poke a sniffer down thru one of the ducts to see if you"re getting freon inside the car, as the evaporator is the only componet which lives "inside".

Yes you would need to disconect it from the rest of the system make up some fittings and presure test, however sometimes they will leak at differing temps as they expand or contract so for instance it leaks when its cold not at ambiant so can be hard to find a leak , I would double check the rest of the system and if 99% sure its ok then pull the evap !!!!

You might be able to detect the dye from the water that dripps out the bottem off the car. With a leak that bad, if it was the evaporator, I would imagine the dye would be all over inside the evaporator housing and possibly some would be carried a way by the water that condenses on the evap. Otherwise, check every thing else again before you pull the evap.

Electronic sniffer should show the general area, but like the other day, I pinched an o-ring on a receiver drier on a Honda and my sniffer read leaks almost everywhere under the hood. Squealed like a banji. Problem with evap leaks is it might just be a connector and you can't pinpoint it.

Yup, fill her with nitrogen and listen. I've used ultra-sonics to find leaks. With a good tester, i could hear your fingers rubbing together at 10 ft away.

I would hazard a guess that it is leaking at one of the fittings where one of the hoses or other components connect.

Don't overlook the Schrader valve where you fill/test pressures on the system. My company car (driver ed) had a leak there - said they needed to replace the valve. Donno if it's the same as a tire valve, but they had to order one.
