Ok so this is the first year I have had pumpkins that did in fact have any pumpkins on them and I have 1 that is a nice orange color and another one close then 3 plus ones that are green so how do you know when to pick them

I think most people wait until after the first killing frost- leaves wilt away, and it supposedly "hardens off" the pumpkins (and squash) so they keep better. And that's usually close enough to Halloween that they'll keep through that day.

It depends on how fast you want pumkin pie two weeks after they turn orange I pick one for my first pie and it tastes good also pumkin soup is good with herbs, keep it thick after all of this to keep it thru the winter pick after the first frost

My vines are at the end of their day on some of my plants in MN. When the vine dies, the punpkin is not getting any riper or bigger. When pure Orange to the stem boundary, they are also done. If you can or freeze the meat, no issue, if you want to keep it till the season of the witch, it might be best to put it in cold storage. Jim

I understood they are ripe when the vine at the pumpkin goes brown,I left them on the ground through a few frosts.Don't know if that is necessary.
Lots of people say to cut them with a little stork attached but the Gardener on radio says it doesn"t matter.
He also said to store them on their side which allows the water to run off, otherwise flat the water accumulates on top and will rot the pumpkin.
Last year I stored flat and they rotted, which proved him right, this year, on side, I will see.
