Starter Drive install

So I received my starter drive for my Ford 900 and somewhere I read or heard to not move the parts on drive assy out. My friend was there when I was getting everything in order to asseemble. and you guessed it he turned the drive where it moved out and it didnt return to the original position. What to do ? have i heard correct or is it okay?
 
I'm not familiar with Ford. But some of the AC's I used to work on probably had the same thing. When you spun the starter, the gear would spin out and lock. It would take the firing of the engine to over come the lock, and return the gear back home.
If you can get the starter re-installed on the tractor without jamming anything it should be OK.
Seems like I have also used a brass or aluminum punch and rapped the gear enough to disengage it.
 
I KNOW that if you accidentally spun the starter drive out on my mid 60's Ford PU. It was done for. It had to go back to the factory to get reset. Just my experiece,not a good one but oh so memorable. gobble
 
James........thems the NEW "posi-drive" starter Bendix's. It hangs into the flywheel drive gear teeth longer and won't come out with a 1-sparke cough. All ya gotta do is hold yer posi-drive gear teeth against a spinning wire-brush grinder wheel and it will with-draw back to the "NON-extended" position. Iff'n it don't work the first time, turn yer starter motor the other way. Simple, eh? ........Dell
 
Just run it up to speed on the wire brush wheel of a bench grinder. It will jump back just like when the flywheel turns it fast enough.
 
Back in the mid 60's I worked in an auto parts store. A man came in that had just bought a new starter drive and spun it out like that. He wanted to know what to do. I was 18 and had not worked on Fords very much so I could not help him. A customer who was standing nearby said to hold it vertical with the gear end up and you could release it with pencil. Then he demonstrated how to do it. He poked the sharpened pencil up inside where the lock out/in mechanism is located and it fell back into place. He did this a couple of times so we all could learn the technique. I have not seen this problem since.
 
Thanks so much for all the help. I got the starter installed ran a jumper from solenoid Batt side to starter side it turned over . Now I have to purchase another solenoid because my son came to help and over tightened one of the smaller of two posts and it broke.How about the new starter switch I bought does the old just unscrew from the top of the transmission?
