Fitting a pinion without a matching gear

Unmatching wear patterns will make for a noisy differential. If it is in an old tractor I say go for it. If it is in a truck I vote for a new gear set.

About the only way one could accomplish that here would be a used one from a parts yard. I have never seen replacements that didn't come as a matched set. It would have to have exactly the same number of teeth as the old one or it would change the ratio. I have never tried anything like that, but wouldn't be above trying it in an difficult situation. Might be a little noisy due to different wear patterns.

your talking about the bull gear pinion and bull gear so i dont think it would be as critical as the diff. crown and pinion. probably have some gear noise but in an emergency it should work . just make sure it has the same tooth count and angle as some are 20 degree and some 25 degree angled teeth. you did not say what your working on.?
in the case of the rear diff thats a different story... i would not replace a pinion with out the crown also. they are only sold as a matched set also. and more of a job to set up.

When I was stationed in Vegas , lost the rear end gear from a 51 chev coup. No Money to buy nes so found a chev set fron a wreck and had em installed. Ring gear only. Screamed so bad it was hard to sit in the car. Sold it. From then on, it was a matched set. papered. LOU.

I put Super H gears in my Farmall H transmission last year but left the original differential in it, and have had no problems. They were both used parts, so I think that helped. I would think that meshing a worn gear to a new one would be noisy.

Just out of curiousity,if you have a donor vehicle why not take both gears? None of my buisness of course just curious. My personal experience says keep them together as a set not just one.most likely problem would be gear noise, followed right behind on the list with premature failure, then complete failure. i cant think of too many vehicles though where to get to one you wouldnt have direct access to the other. or that you wouldnt have to remove the one to get to the other.

That's my vote also. If someone already took the ring gear, find a different donor to get the complete set from. They're already worn into each other.

i think there is confusion here as to what your talking about, from what i can tell is the axle pinion on a TRACTOR which turns the bull gear, not the differential. tell what your working on to get a proper reply.

I have replaced several sets of governor gears using unmatched sets in John Deere tractors without a problem. Just shim them up as usual. If it's straight bevel gears I wouldn't be afraid to try it, just match them as best you can and shim as usual. If they look good and feel good after installing it will probably be ok.

Its the rear end on a Massey Ferguson 97 (same as a MM705). The reason I was asking about the Pinion only rather than both matching items was that only the pinion is showing damage. The shipping from the USA on only the pinion is acceptable but hugely expensive when shipping the gear aswell.
