I have a window a/c unit that quit. It is 24000 btu. I would like to find one that size. I did find a 18000 btu for a fair price. Don't know much about air conditoioners. Is there a lot of difference between a 24000 btu, and a 18000 btu? Stan

Was the 24,000 btu unit able to cool the structure on the hottest day and cycle on and off ? Or did it's compressor operate continuous?

That would depend on where he had the thermostat set.
You need to set it back where the unit CAN shut down when it reaches that setting. Will change if 104 outside or 84 outside.

Looking at it from one angle, a 18000 output is only three-fourths the size of a 24000. As has already been mentioned, depends on how the old unit handled the job, but I got a feeling that 18000 wouldn't be enough.

I think it never shut off, but kept cooling. It did get the room cool. Are these units made to run all the time, or should they cycle on, and off. Stan

Stan, the longer they run, the better they dehumidify. It's not all about getting it as cool as you can but getting the humidity out as well. 12000 BTU's = 1 ton of cooling. You had 2 tons but with the efficiency of the new units, the 18000 BTU unit will meet your load.

have no idea what your setup is -

but I'd think you'd be a whole lot better off with two 12000's in different windows.

Total 24000 - but spread out so it cools everything more quickly and evenly.

I was in Wal_Mart the other day and they had units from 5000 up to around 26,000BTUs so they have the size your looking for but maybe junk too. That said as far as running all the time some units the fan runs 24/7 as long as you have them turned on. Other units the fan and compressor both shut down on. And others have an energy saving thing that will shut them all the way off is set that way but if set in normal cool the fan runs all the time

If the 24,000 btu compressor never shut off and the unit barely kept the room cool then the 18,000 btu unit will not keep the room cool.
