Cortisone in the knee

How many of you have had success with cortisone shot in your knee? To backup a little bit, my family doc took xrays and said there's a piece of bone floating in there. Today the orthopedist asked me if the knee catches and I said no. It only hurts when I walk. I can climb a ladder while only mildly gritting my teeth and I can kneel, I just can't walk far. He mumbled miniscus (sp) tear and a little arthritis and shot in the cortisone. He said the analgesic will start working at suppertime (now) and the cortisone will kick in later. Well tonight I'm hurtin like he!!. We went to the grocery store late this afternoon and I couldn't carry two six packs of beer more than fifty feet when I just couldn't go any farther without making a scene. A checkout girl even came up to me and asked if I was OK. I called Marilyn on the cell phone to find out where she was so I could lean on the cart and I heard her phone ring just across the isle LOL!

The ortho sent me to a physical therapist, who I happen to know well, and after feeling around for awhile she suspects there's something floating around in there.

I had cortisone shot in my back four years ago and it did absolutely nothing.

So here I sit, ready to knock back a 7.2 beer I bought today. Maybe that'll cure it for awhile. Jim, a guy with very little patience with his malfunctioning body!!!!!!

I have had several, all through my body due to degenerative joint desease, on 99% of my joints. Some it helped, some it didnt, but each one hurt for a little while afterwards.

I had a shot in the knee for what the doc said was a torn mimiscus. The shot did wonders. Knee was still iffy & painful for about a year, but after the shot I could sleep. Before the shot, that knee hurt so bad I couldn't sleep.

The ortho did ask me if the Xray was taken standing or laying down. I said laying down. He would have liked to have had it done standing so he could see the width of the gap in there. I saw the Xray and the bones look very good to my untrained eye. Jim

not knee but shoulder and elbow.

Shot in the elbow fixed it. Shoulder fixed it for about 3 weeks. Gave me two more shots that didn't do anything but give me some of the worst pain I've ever felt. Ended up getting surgery on the shoulder and it's at least 90% of what it was pre-injury.

Marilyn had it in the fingers and it worked OK. I'll see how it feels in the morn. The 8.5, not7.2, beer didn't do a thing and I only do one a night so. So much for that idea! Had to pop a hydrocortisone at 2:00 this morning so I could sleep the rest of the night. I'll have it on the bedstand tonight. Jim

I had shots in my knees starting in 97. At first they would help but as of about 2000 they did nothing except for the first 6-7 hours. Finally 2 years ago I blew out my left knee bad while wearing a metal framed knee brace. They did an MRI on it and found out I had a "foreign object" floating around in there. After 3 months on crutches they removed it, was a bone frag covered in cartilage about the size of a dive. After the surgery the doc tells me "you need a new knee". Because it's VA I'm still waiting for it.

Good luck

Rick

I have a chunk of bone "floating" in my elbow from a snowboarding accident a few years ago. They didnt want to operate on it then, still don't now. They said if I ever had trouble a cortisone shot would help or then they would do surgery. Hearing your story makes me nervous. Anytime I bump that elbow it is the worst pain I have ever had. My sister is a physical therapsit and she says nothing replaces corrective surgery for joints with bone fragments "floating" in them.

Fell down THRU some pallet racks, had exactly what you have. put up with draing it ,shots and all kind of things for about two years. About an hour operation , three days of healing and have never had problems since.. Go get it fixed.

Used to have a bunch of cats... Always an eye infection because of sumpin (purebreds)... Had antibiotic cream always on hand to fix it. Cat had a bad eye, I grabbed a tube of cream. Happened to be cortisone cream (my mistake)... Eyeball blew up to twice+ it's size and busted... I'll never forget that... Cortisone is not a good thing. Get it fixed right.

After one Cortisone shot, I said "Never again" !
I don't know what hurt worse, the novicane shot,
with a 4 inch needle, or the followup with a
6 inch needle, and cortisone. Like in the old
movies, I wonder if a bottle of whiskey and a
stick to bite down on wouldn't be less painful!

I have AS and they have put those shots all kinds of places. I don't like them. I'm probably looking for a miracle, but each time I have been disappointed. I haven't ever thought the shots hurt real bad - the knee was actually the least painful.

I will never forget saying something to the doctor about not liking what the painkillers I was on must be doing to my body. He said, "That cortisone shot you're getting is way worse for you."

I've avoided them as much as I can since.

Never had it shot into my knee, but I've had several shots of it into my shoulder, none of them did any good or resulted in any relief at all.

Well, I'll tell ya, every step I make this morning is maybe on a 7-8 on a pain scale of 0-10 with 0 being the least pain. Now it's on the bone on the inside of the knee (toward the other knee) just at the bottom of the joint. It's even tender to the touch. I'm gonna quit the whining and ride it out till my next appt on Aug 2. We take off for a week in the Black Hills on July 21, with several granddaughters and it doesn't look like there will be any hiking for me. Marilyn said she's taking the girls whether I go or not so I'm pretty much railroaded into it. At 61 I'm just not ready to slow down anytime soon! Jim

I broke my ankle a few years back, about 5 years to be exact. They sent me to the company PT/ Dr. and their goal of course was to get me off of the list. After several mths of PT, and even after several xrays, they pronounced me cured. Then of course they started the waver sign off crap, which I signed to keep my job. That was in Aug. Then in Dec after walking a lot while deer hunting, all hell broke lose with the ankle. By days end it had swollen about double it's normal size. The next day it was down somewhat, so I went to a sports medicine guy. He told me that I still ahd a broken bone in the ankle. He gave me a shot of the corrtesone . At first it didn't seem to work, but about 5 days later it kicked in and I haven't had a problem since. I hope it kicks in for you!

get you a set of these and a bottle of aspirins so you don't ruin the trip. Little different than armpit sticks, but after a few minutes you'll learn to like them.

Have fun...

I don't know what happened to my last post.Give it some time. It took about a week for my ankle shot to work.

I had a shot in the knee in May and it definitely helped. Ortho guy also set me up for Physical therapy and that"s helping too.

Had both minisci repaired 11 years ago and some arthritis removed.

Back in May, on to a podiatrist to biopsy a suspicious black spot under a toe nail. (Pathology report negative--a hematoma.) Anyway, X-rays showed movement and dislocation of big toe joint and other toe joint issues in my right foot. Will require surgery. He says that"s been the cause of my knee problem--screwed up my gait.

But-I really don"t see how a cortisone shot or shots will be any kind of a permanent fix for a torn miniscus or a piece of something "floating" in the knee. The only solution to either of those issues is surgery.

Ive had three knee surgeries due to college football injuries. I have had my meniscus taken out of both knees. I have also had about a dozen shots while I was in college they always made my knees feel great but never lasted long and only did more damage. My wife is a nurse in orthopedics and she jokes about how soon ill be in there getting my knee rebuilt. Best bet is to bite the bullet and get a bilateral knee replacement.

Dave im thinking about that pretty strong.
My mom used one for the rest of her life
after she had polio in 1951. Jim

Sorry the shot did not help your knee. However, it did help your Dr.'s bank account, and will add to the PHYs Thero's bank acct too.

Wish I could figure out how to get paid for doing stuff that only works about 10% of the time.
