Another stinging insect (long ?)

Mind you I'm not young anymore, and I've just learned there's another stinging insect on my property. This thing burrows in the ground is abut 2 inches long 3/8 to 1/2 in wide redish brown with a black band around the abdomen. I've seen these around for years never paying much attention to them. They run into me some times no problem. I used to call them B-52's. Saturday one got me on the lower leg. Almost pee'd myself. WOW IT HURT. After dancing around and cussing I tried the penny and some cream for stings neither worked much. Still hurts some today. What in the world was or is it cause it's still in the yard.

My guess would be a gound hornet.

probably what we call a spider killer wasp. not the real name i dont think.has a hole in the ground and are generaly pretty easy going.but they can sting the heck out of you if they get mad since they are so large.ive been told they hunt tarantulas,and will get a small lizard or the like.out of them all bumble bees are the worst in my opinion.get a nest of them stirred up and they dont quit.

By the color and size sounds like a mud wasp. But I don't know if they burrow.

probably the cicada killer wasp. Google for pictures.
Lots of them in my lawn.

I got hit by a cicada killer, in the back of the neck, once, felt like I was growing another head! did your friend look like this?

Got stung one time and there was nothing around but an onion. The juice and a onion poultice seemed to help some.

Yep cicada killer. I wonder if they have a backup enterence? I'd hate to think I got the better of him just to have him tap me on the shoulder then get me again. (the kid watches cartoons)

I think maybe Great Golden Digger wasp from your description. I have worked around them and they don't seem too aggressive normally. They are bug eaters and considered beneficial but no fun to get stung by I'm sure.

Yep, cicada killer. Things get dang near big as a hummingbird. They literally prey on cicadas; when you see one carrying a cicada to its ground hole it would remind you of a 747 piggy-backing the space shuttle.

I agree with the others - cicada killer. Never been stung or bothered by one.

Wasps are my problem. They seem to be after me this year and particularly like to buzz my face.

I"ve gotten to the point where if I can swat one, I do. Doesn"t matter if its bothering me or not.
